Payntr Sport Proto RC during GolfLink testing

Spiked golf shoes have a reputation problem. They grip like crazy, but some of them also walk like cleats on a parking lot and leave their mark on every green.

The Payntr Sport Proto RS doesn't. Over 36 holes of walking, the spikes did their job without ever making themselves known, and the shoe earned a perfect score for traction.

No shoe is perfect (yet), but here's how the Proto RS earned its 90/100, and where it gave a few points back.

Every pair of shoes we review is course-tested for at least 36 holes and rated for comfort, traction, waterproofing, style, and value. Our hands-on process ensures you get honest, consistent recommendations you can trust. Learn more about our full testing and scoring process.

How We Tested the Payntr Sport Proto RS

I walked 36 holes in the Sport Proto RS, carrying my bag, over two cool fall mornings. I took them straight out of the box and onto the course, with no break-in period.

I caught a few sprinkles but no real rain, so traction and comfort got the bulk of the workout.

Payntr Sport Proto RS Comfort: 9/10

Payntr Sport Proto RC during GolfLink testing

The Proto RS needed a few holes to loosen up, and that's about the extent of my complaints.

Straight out of the box, they felt a bit stiff and slightly on the big side. Neither one caused any pain or blistering, and the stiffness was gone well before the turn.

The sizing stuck around. Like most Payntr shoes I've tested, the Proto RS runs slightly big. I simply retied them a little tighter and had no issues the rest of the way.

I'm not sure I'd size down given the chance, so I'd stick with your usual size and expect a roomier fit. The soft Ariaprene tongue is one of the most comfortable parts of the shoe.

Traction: 10/10

The Proto RS is one of only three shoes, out of 24 we've tested, to earn a perfect 10 for traction. The other two are Payntr's own Eighty Seven SC and the ECCO Biom Tour.

With some spiked shoes, the spikes get in the way. They mark up greens, catch during your stride, or just feel like too much shoe for a recreational round.

The Proto RS gets the balance right. I never noticed the spikes while walking or on the greens, and I never once lost traction during a swing. That's exactly what you want from a spiked shoe: all of the grip, none of the annoyance. That's one of the reasons these shoes made our Fall 2026 list of the best golf shoes for walking.

The Tour Flex Pro spikes are replaceable, so you can restore that grip once they wear down instead of replacing the whole shoe.

Waterproofing: 8/10

Payntr Sport Proto RC during GolfLink testing

The Proto RS uses Payntr's Waterproof+ membrane with a sealed bottom gasket, and it gave me no issues. To be fair, the sprinkles I encountered during testing didn't put the waterproofing to much of a test.

The one spot I'd keep an eye on is the tongue. That Ariaprene tongue feels soft, not what you’d expect from a waterproof component. So I dripped some water from a water bottle directly onto the tongue. While it didn’t let water through, it didn’t repel it, either. The top layer absorbed most of it, and the bottom layer did its job to keep the inside of the shoe completely dry.

The Proto RS comes without a warranty or stated duration on its waterproofing. A 1- or 2-year guarantee is always a good way to deliver that final shot of confidence in the waterproof construction.

Style: 9/10

The Proto RS gets noticed. In my first test round, one of my playing partners asked, “What are those shoes?” When I said Payntr, none of the three had heard of the brand.

I was so surprised, I couldn’t tell if they were being serious. They’re all single-digit players who are around the game constantly, not to mention Payntr Golf is based one state over in Portland, and one of them has played with me wearing various Payntr models for three years.

What stood out during this test was the bright orange of the Ember colorway and the large, high-contrast logo on the heel. They also earned a few compliments from the group.

From purely a looks standpoint, I prefer other Payntr styles over this one. Those bright accents and that big logo aren't elements I'm usually drawn to. But I can’t argue with the fact that those are the elements that draw attention from my partners, who complemented the looks.

It all comes down to your personal taste. Overall, the Proto RS is a good-looking modern golf shoe, and if the Ember accents are louder than you'd like, the White/Black/Haze colorway is another option.

MSRP: $180

Comfortable, waterproof, and spiked: the Proto RS delivers everything you'd expect from all three categories, and at $180, it's easily 10 to 20 percent cheaper than most tour-level competition that check the same boxes.

The clearest comparison is in-house. The Eighty Seven SC also scored 90/100 with a perfect 10 for traction, and it costs $220. The Proto RS gets you the same result for $40 less.

The only things keeping it from a perfect 10 are the open question on how much water that tongue can absorb before your socks begin to feel it, and the lack of a waterproofing warranty, which make it harder to predict how long your $180 will last. But I can say based on the other Payntr Golf shoes I’ve worn over the years, that I’ve yet to encounter any waterproofing issues through multiple seasons.

Making the Call

The best spiked shoes give you all the grip and none of the reminders, and that's exactly what the Payntr Sport Proto RS delivered over 36 holes.

It runs a bit big, and the styling is louder than I'd pick for myself. But a perfect traction score, all-day walking comfort, and a $180 price tag make the Proto RS one of the best values in spiked golf shoes.
