Top New England Golf Courses

The Region of New England containing Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island has long been home to great golf courses. Indeed, New England and the larger Eastern coast can be called the cradle for American golf, and is home to some of the oldest and most historic courses this side of the Atlantic. Segregansett Country Club

First formed in 1893, the Segregansett Country Club is a formerly private, now semi-private course located in Taunton, MA. The course is hailed by local golfers for its challenging layout and the immaculate greens and fairways, as well as the relaxing atmosphere of the country club. Golfers should expect deep bunkers, a few turtle greens and forced carries to challenge them throughout their round of golf.

Green Valley Country Club

Another semi-private Country Club, the course at Green Valley offers a championship level course in Portsmouth, RI. Founded in 1957, Green Valley will challenge golfers with several particularly long holes including a 600 yard par 5 and a 240 yard par 3.

Raceway Golf Club

Originally designed by father and son John and Donald J. Hoenig on their family farm in the 1940s, Raceway has since expanded into a premier New England course. Maintaining its rustic beauty, Raceway Golf Club provides a challenging course that is typical of a New England layout, though modern sand traps and greens have been added.

Gilead Highlands at Blackledge Country Club

Gilead Highlands is one of two public courses at Blackledge Country Club in Hebron, CT. Built using the natural rolling hills, this woodland course has numerous elevation changes to challenge any golfer's decision making. It is also well known for its lovely forested surroundings and is best enjoyed during peak fall colors.

North Course at Lake of Isles

The North Course is one of the two courses managed by world renown Troon at Lake of Isles. The course features both the heavily wooded Connecticut countryside and a 90 acre lake. Elevation changes and several undulating greens make for a serious challenge, while multiple tee boxes help accomodate less skilled golfers.

Oak Ridge Golf Club

Oak Ridge Golf Club was founded in 1974 and sets itself apart by being one of the few all-season courses in New England. A primarily woodland course, Oak Ridge features more water hazards than most courses in the region making this a course that demands accuracy. In addition, this public course also provides excellent value for skilled golfers and hackers alike.

Sunday River Golf Club has long been considered one of the tope courses in Maine. Nestled into a beautiful mountain setting, Sunday River's attraction is more than its beathtaking views. It features many challenging holes to test the most skilled golfers with deep bunkers and elevation changes.

Wahconah Country Club

Wahconah Country Club is another of New England's semi-private courses that make it possible for tourists to play the pristine fairways and greens that would otherwise be reserved purely for members only. Originally built in 1929, this course is known for having a more wide open front 9 with a traditional New England narrow and wooded back 9 to challenge golfers.

Mount Washington Course at Omni Mount Washington Resort

This over 100 year old course was restored by Brian Silva in 2008 using the original plans of the course designer. The result is a thoroughly faithful recreation of an early 20th century course located at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. Some of these features include bunker shapes and depths that may seem odd to modern golfers but allow for a classic feel of a bygone era.

Crumpin-Fox Club

The delightfully named Crumpin-Fox was first built in the 1970s but multiple updates have created a modern woodlands course. Known for the immaculate condition of the course and its challenging elevation changes, this is a course best enjoyed by golfers with confident shotmaking abilities. It has consistently found itself ranked in numerous top 100 lists and should not be missed by any golfer traveling through New England.

The Woodstock Country Club boasts one of America's great courses and is located at the Woodstock Inn & Resort rural Vermont. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., this is a championship level course at a club that has been around since 1895. Simply put, this is a country club that knows golf and provides one of the best experiences in America. Its challenging course has enough elevation changes, bunkers, and water hazards to keep even the most skillful scratch golfers satisfied.
