Walked this course the other day on a Tuesday afternoon. Zero houses, roads or anything to suggest you are in virginia beach. This is a sand based course carved through a pine forest on a nature preserve. Reminds me of the courses you find in the pinehurst area. The condition were ok for a bermuda based course in early April. Not the best but it cost less than $20 to walk in the afternoon and I had the course to myself. Regarding value... I've paid far more for far worse experiences. Course is not extremely difficult but still provides a good layout that penalized bad shots. Overall I was happy and will go back. I'd like to see the course in the summer once the bermuda comes in.

The worst experience we've had at a golf course. The overwieght gentleman behind the counter was rude and disinterested. Won't be back here, ever!

There have been exceptional improvements at this golf course! There are several new staff members including a very talented knowledgeable, and detail oriented Superintendent and a new Golf Pro. The course has never looked better. Play this course and you will be very impressed!

don't be too impressed... its risky to go here, it could be great or down right awful

I golfed 4 courses while in virginia beach with my wife. Stumpy lake was by far in the best condition, and was the best layout. It was the end of a very dry summer and the greens and fairways were in great shape. The staff was fantastic. My wife and I got around the course in less than 4 hours. The ranger was extremly respectful and helpful. He made my wife feel very comfortable with his friendly manner. The course is such a fantastic layout (no homes, no overlapping fairways, no brush in treelines, big greens, fluffy bunkers, great scenery) that many people want to play it. The pace of play was fantastic. Thank You Stumpy Lake for the best round of golf on my vaction.

As a new golfer, i enjoyed this course immensely. Although it poured down rain the night before, the course had almost no standing water and the greens were fast and perfect. All staff treated me and my brother well. The scenery of the course was great. Lots of wildlife. I can see a more experienced golfer thinking this course may be too easy though. It was very forgiving for new golfers. Very few water hazards and even sand bunkers were not much of a threat. Rough was almost as nice as the very wide fairways. Unless you hit into the woods, which required an extremely poor shot, no matter where you landed you were in good shape. As my experience increases, i can see myself looking for more of a challenge. But for now, this is an excellent course for someone of my skill level.

Played weekend of Apr-17-10. Have played here for years, the new greens are in great shape and the new club house is awesome. Irrigation was added last year and will be a big help during the summer. Great open and secluded course for beginners but challenging enough for the regular golfer. Watch out for snakes, deer and bald eagles!

I played Stumpy Lake on 03/07 and found everybody extremely friendly. You can not beat this course for the money. The whole group enjoyed the round.

Good beginners course, no houses to hit.

Decent course, nothing all that memorable. Went twice while on family vacation. Odd layout, and almost horrible maintenance while on my two trips.

If you have the opportunity to play any other course in Virginia Beach - do so. Though the course is in good shape, the staff and treatment of "customers" is well beyond rude. It only seems to get worse with time.

Stumpy Lake has done a tremendous turn-around from a year ago. Fairways and greens are well maintained. The staff are excellent in their customer service. This time I felt as if I was treated with the same courtesy as everyone else. The only downside (though it doesn't bother me most of the time) is the ever presence of maintenance projects going on - mower tructors here and there, sprinkles going on during game play. I guess maintenance couldn't be scheduled before and after playing hours. Overall - it's a big improvement from last year.

i live in the golf mecca of florida now but played stumpy lake years ago and as i can see things havent changed...The course itself is a great layout but thats where the positives end...I took my wife there once and after she hit a tee shot off #1 about 80 yards the starter came up to us in the fairway and told us" she may want to pick her ball up and drop it with yours"..she was nearly in tears and after 9 he commented that he didnt know what we were doing but we left the group ahead of us...On a second trip there with my regular 4some, we stopped after nine for a quick sandwich, only to find the same type of treatment, the starter actually came inside the snack bar and told us to get back to the 10 tee...What a joke of a staff...

DO NOT PLAY HERE. MARSHAL LAW IN EFFECT! We have never felt humiliated like we did here. The marshal was very rude. Pointing his finger and raising his voice at us. "I TOLD YOU TO HURRY UP!!!" With no one behind us and 4 infront of us, we were not slow. They will follow you and hide behind trees. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Yup, my two names for this course vary b/w Dumpy Lake and Grumpy Lake. Pros-it is in great condition random times each year and the location is awesome, almost out on its own island. Cons-conditions always inconsistent, sometimes the greens are beatiful, other times they are jokes with grass almost as long as the fairway cut. Indeed the course is a public "wanna-be private" course with a bunch of grumpy old men running it. I don't let it get to me though, I use it as entertainment such as totally blowing off the marshalls when they harass and ALWAYS take a few extra minutes (provided no groups are behind you) at the shallow pond on the 18th right next to the club house to fish for balls. That really fires them up, they start yelling like they own the balls once into the water. I proceed to smile and wave as I continue to collect!!:)
