Blue Tees Captain Air Review: A Tech-Savvy Golfer’s Dream?
Why Captain Air is the most capable $249 rangefinder on the market

Can a $249 rangefinder rival today’s $400+ units? Blue Tees thinks so, and honestly, after testing the new Blue Tees Captain Air, I think so, too.
While there’s one thing keeping it out of my bag, I expect legions of tech-savvy golfers to fall in love with it.
How We Test Rangefinders
Every rangefinder we review is tested both on the course over at least 18 holes, and in a premeasured environment with precisely measured distances. This testing verifies accuracy within inches and compares performance across key categories like speed, optics, and ease of use. Learn more about how we test rangefinders.

Accuracy

Blue Tees packed countless features into the Captain Air, yet they didn’t lose sight of the core function: accuracy.
In my testing in a premeasured environment, the Captain Air’s accuracy was flawless, scoring a perfect 10 out of 10. Perfect scores in our test are reserved for units that are accurate within one foot or less on every shot across a series of measurements.
Optics
The Captain Air features an LCD display with 6x magnification and a high-contrast red/black HD display.
The display is crisp and I found it to be competitive with some units that feature an upgraded OLED when testing head-to-head.
Unless an OLED display is the only thing you care about, the Captain Air delivers everything you need.
Features & Ease of Use

Features and ease of use are often in a push-pull relationship. The more features a rangefinder offers, the more difficult it (usually) is to use, and that proved to be the case with the Captain Air.
Download the app. Create a profile. Connect via Bluetooth. Pair it with the app.
Want to take advantage of the GPS features? Start your round on the app. Connect Captain Air. Launch Scout AI. Toggle to your desired screen.
And I thought hitting a fairway was the hard part.
Before my first round I got all set up in the app, paired the rangefinder, added my club distances in the app, started my round in the app, but forgot to launch Scout AI, and couldn’t figure out why club recommendations wouldn’t show up.
Before my next round, I made sure to do all that and launch Scout AI, but still didn’t see club recommendations, not knowing that I had to toggle through a menu of app-provided data to get to the screen I was looking for.
When I tried again two holes later, the rangefinder and app had lost connection. So I decided to pick my own clubs.
Personally, I strive to be calm and focused on the course. Trying to figure out why my rangefinder wouldn’t tell me what club to hit was a distraction I didn’t enjoy.
The functionality is there for the taking, but you need to carve out some time to learn how to use it effectively.
Design & Build Quality
The Blue Tees Captain Air is rated IP67 dust + waterproof, meaning it’s totally dust-proof and can withstand more water than you’ll ever put it through on the golf course (assuming you keep it out of the pond).
The battery is USB-C rechargeable, a convenient feature for those who are tired of getting caught without a spare battery, and a necessary one for a unit that utilizes Bluetooth to pull in GPS distances.
The Captain Air also offers a Find My Rangefinder feature, using the GPS to locate the device if it’s ever lost. That’s a nice bonus considering that rangefinders are among the most lost golf accessories.
How Does Captain Air Compare?
Dollar for dollar, the Blue Tees Captain Air is a juggernaut.
Most rangefinders that offer data-based club recommendations cost $400 or more.
Most $250 rangefinders can’t tap into personalized data or GPS distances.
That’s Captain Air’s edge.
Here’s how it compares to the Bushnell Tour V7 Shift and Shot Scope Pro L5.
