Golf Books Worth Reading - The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods by Hank Haney

With the current coronavirus pandemic disrupting both professional and recreational golfers, it's a great time to brush up on your reading with some of the great golf books on offer. Today, we look at the account of Tiger Woods’ glory years through the eyes of his coach Hank Haney.

The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Woods

Hank Haney coached Woods from 2004-2010, during which Woods won 6 of his 15 majors. Haney spent time with Woods both on the course and off, seeing him when he was in the spotlight and at home with his family. In the book, Haney provides behind the scenes stories to illustrate the complicated nature of perhaps golf’s greatest player. This includes both descriptions of the notoriously insular Woods as well as some of his hitherto unknown hobbies. An example is Woods' interest in the Navy SEAL training, including participating in high stress workouts and simulated situations akin to the training SEALs go through. These trainings sometimes affected Woods' golf game but that wasn't enough to get him to stop, much to Haney's dismay. Where Haney succeeds is by coming across as a sympathetic and neutral observer as he’s telling these stories. Rather than being a glorified PR work or some sort of tabloid tell-all, Haney comes across as someone who was genuinely honored to coach Woods and who wanted and wants to see him succeed. This book is perfect for fans of Woods or anyone who wants to understand the life of one of the world's greatest athletes.
