Great course, I love golfing here. It never gets old or boring, and creates a challenge each time.

The Birr course is far different from the Callow at Ironwood. More blind shots and quite a bit more water to contend with. Smart play and "shot making" will definitely benefit you more than trying to crush the ball on this course. Even more that Callow, you want somebody who has played the course before along with you, or buy the hole by hole guide in the pro shop. I also feel that this course is one the nicest in the area, and it offers absolutely beautiful views and scenery. It has unique challenges, but I can also see how you could shave 5 strokes off your score easily just by playing it a second time and knowing the layout better. Walking up nine to the green is absolutely beautiful. What amazing course architecture. I will disagree with the previous review on one point, though. Aside from hole seven and maybe 8 on Callow, I would recommend Callow over Birr more for beginner to intermediate players. If your struggling with your game at all, or just haven't learned yet how to play smart golf, the Birr course can chew you up and spit you out. Also, there are a couple fairly punishing greens depending on pin placement. Again, though, it is a great course to play, and makes me want to back out right away to improve on it.

Best Value in Milwaukee Area

As I said in my review of the Meath course at Ironwood, I just think this is the best course in the Milwuakee area. And of the 3 full nines at Ironwood, this course, though the newest of the three, is my favorite. With lots of grassy mounds on almost every hole, this course reminds me of courses in the Sheboygan area. Like the Meath, this course rewards well-placed shots, with heavy rewards for those who know when to play aggressive and those who know when to set-up an easy up-and-down for par. The hole 6, par 5, is drivable in two, but requires a long approach over water; play around the bend of water and you can place your third shot within feet of the hole for an easy birdie chance. Lots of "smart play" shots allow the thinking man or woman to play with or even beat the big guns out on the course. There are no punishing greens, errant placed bunkers, or "gimmikie" holes to ruin the experience, just smart hole layout. As the newest of the three nines, it still needs some asthetic work, but is still prettier than many other courses in this price range. This course will be more suitable for a begginer-intermediate golfer, so Ironwood can accomodate any golfer, at least for nine holes.
