Course Reviews

I played the course last week. I was very skeptical after reading the reviews. I want to tell you that I am so glad that I went ahead and played. Everyone at this course could not have been nicer, from the pro shop to the starter. The price was $27.00 and they gave me the veterans rate of $22.00. Fairways are in great shape. The greens are wonderful, at just the right speed. I understand that it is under new ownership and they are trying very hard to improve. Now don't get me wrong the paths still need work. But I don't play a course for the paths. I will be traveling south again in the spring with a group of guys and will put this on our list of a place to stop. I recommend this to be stop if you get a chance.
Thanks Kris Anderson

Today was the first time I've played at Northwoods in two years. I haven't gone back for a while because I always felt like my business wasn't appreciated (the person taking the money would usually act as is if I was a burden).

Well today, to give them another chance, I went back. Again, the person at the front desk acted as if I was a women begging to play at a Mens Only; golf course (I'm a white male btw). The green's fee was WAY MORE than any of the other golf courses I usually play in the area. About %60 more. So, my buddy and I are on the first tee as a rude Ranger comes by telling us we can't tee off because they have a golf tournament going on. But our tee time is now; I said. He said sorry, but maybe we could tee off on #10. Then, without the opportunity to take a practice swing, he escorted us to #10 and forced us in front of someone else about to tee off. This made them mad, and us very uncomfortable with our first shot. The back nine was worse than a dog track. We couldn't find out balls on the fairways because of too many leaves. Mud was everywhere, and it hasn't rained in two weeks. The greens were the worst I have ever seen (seriously). Mud, bumpy, ugly, and about a 100 on the stimp meter.

Finally, we get back to #1 and we get behind a group of 5 players. 5????????? That's just not cool. They were very bad players too. And after two holes, waiting for what seemed like an hour, we asked to play through, and they said NO. So, we quit and asked for rainchecks, but I don't want to go back anyway ever again. My experiences have always been bad, but this was the last time.

Oak Hills, which looks nicer than Pebble beach most of the time, only charges 25 and they are never crowded. I can think of 6 more course locally for much less money than Northwoods, but MUCH NICER courses in MUCH BETTER shape, with MUCH BETTER customer service.

With all of the choices for golf around Columbia, SC, this ranks near the bottom for me.

The prices are bit high and it seems that everytime I'm there, they're performing some kind of maintenance to the course. I've had holes that were closed, greens that were being repaired, etc.

And, if they don't replace some of those bridges, I'm convinced that someone is going to fall into a creek!

The course itself is OK. I can never seem to play well there (maybe because I'm too distracted from the repairs). Even from the whites, the course is rather demanding and relies a bit on distance (which I have little of).

Despite this, it always seems to be crowded. The last two times I played it, we were waiting and waiting on much of the front 9.

Overall, I wouldn't say this is a terrible course as I've played it a few times already. But, it's certain not in my top 5 for Columbia...

Played on 5/30/08 - the last reviewer was right. The back nine greens are 50/50. The 16th green was actually closed for play. The "pro shop" looks like a discount store and the food counter only takes cash but they provide an ATM machine in the shop. Also, they take a credit card charge of nothing less than $15, so get your drinks before you hit the course or take cash. The fairways were mostly ok, but I found myself hitting off (very brown) hardpan on a few holes. The practice tee was a disater - hardpan and balls that looked rescued from the water a decade ago. And speaking of water, they *do not* provide drinking water on the course. Something's up with the score card as well - the red tees are rated 67.8/116 with the gold tees at 67.6/113. (there's 1,000 yards difference between the two - go figure). Lastly, the score card yardages don;t match the markers at the tee boxes and the cart paths are spine-busters. Sheesh! Looks like they need new....something. Will play again later in the year to see if *something* improves. (14th hole is *very* fun if you have a creative short game).

played 4-21-08, many greens on back 9 in horid condition, no water on the whole course? 50 bucks please!

Very nice course, and for the cost it's a bargain!

Great value, very good course.

I played the course in early July ('07) and it was in very good shape. If you're in the area, you need to stop and play this course. It's probably the best public course in Columbia, and for $30, it's an absolute steal.

Northwoods Gold Club

Good course played 4/1/07, tough & unusal #14, in area stop & play.

great course

JUST HIT THE BALL STRAGIGHT IS THE NAME OF THE GAME AT THIS COURSE. I LOVE THE PAR 4 #14 YOU CAN DRIVE THE GREEN IF YOU DARE TO TAKE YOUR TEE SHOT OVER THE WATER. GREAT COURSE OVER ALL. THE GREENS ALWAYS ROLE GREAT AT NORTHWOODS.
