Nice little course with new clubhouse on the way--overpriced a bit!

This course is a gem sitting in the middle of southeastern Oklahoma right next to East Central University. It's nicely maintained year round but is especially challenging in the late summer when the bermuda grass rough is allowed to grow up a bit. Beware if your ball finds one of those areas of 8 inch tall, thick!! green grass!

Fairways are pretty wide in most places but trees everywhere (including lots of oak trees...hence the name)make the course challenging nonetheless. Greens are small and that adds to the challenge as well. Very few bunkers and not much water to contend with. Because it's laid out in a compact area (though it does not at all feel "cramped," you can often hit into the neighboring fairway and still make par (if you can clear the trees on the way back).

The setting is magnificent...rolling hills, abundant woods and a creek (at times dry) cutting through the heart of it. It's fun to just take a second and enjoy the view between shots.

Amenities are not great. There are two bathrooms and a few water fountains (shut off in the winter due to freezes)out on the course and the clubhouse is quite outdated. However, a new clubhouse is being built and should be ready some time in 2007. That should make the facilities much better. Staff is friendly. Carts are new if you need to rent one. Food is good in the upstairs lounge and dining room. The usual hot dogs in the pro shop.

About the only beef is the price. It's a bit pricey at $60 or so for 18 holes for non-members. That's more than some other, fancier courses charge in neighboring cities.

Still, in Ada, it's the only real golf course. Lakewood and the
Eccentric Duffer are public courses (both 9 hole with the latter being a par 3 course)and are nearby but due to lack of maintenance, they are not enjoyable to play.

Oak Hills does water during the dry summer months and that makes the course delightful year round. All in all, if you are looking for a place to play in the Ada area, it's your only real choice and a good one even if overpriced.
