Nice course. Played Black Rock on a mild Saturday morning in July. This course is in excellent shape - good enough shape for a private course, let alone a muni.

Black Rock is a par 72 layout that features quite a bit of hills and uneven lies. There is some water on the course, but not much. There are water carries for second (or third shots if you lay up) on holes 13 and 18. No real boring holes on the entire course. The fairways, rough and greens were in great shape. A fun round of golf.

My golfing colleague paid for me, but I understand the course greens fees are reasonable. In summary, a recommended play if you are in the area.

This course is exceptionally well maintained. Tee boxes are excellent, fairways are lush, and greens roll consistently...moderately fast.
There are plenty of challenging holes: #8 and #11 are long and uphill, #13 is a dogleg right, with a tough tee shot, a lake guarding a very difficult green, and #18 requires a good tee shot to clear another lake. At least the 18th green is fairly benign.

Par 3s are relatively short, but the greens on #7 and #17 are not easy to find.

This is a muni that looks, and plays better than some semi-private courses I've played. A terrific value.

WEC4U wrote just about the perfect review for Black Rock. If you want a quality mid-price course, this is it! It is fair but rather challenging...starts gradually easy and soon becomes relentless in challenging shots (challenging yet in a fun way). The course is very scenic with abundant hills...tough to walk. Lots of doglegs that require precision shots. Some doglegs a little tough on the short hitter like Holes 8 and 13, making reaching the green in two nearly impossible. Traps abound...especially right in front of the green and the greens are shallow with several greens considerably sloped. The Par 4 Hole #13 may be one of the hardest holes in the must hit a monster tee shot to make the dogleg right which is guarded by a huge tree. Anything short and you have no place to go because of a pond in front of the green. Hole #14 is not any easier though it is a par 5, guarded by numerous traps and a severely slopped green. The Par 4 18th is guarded by a large pond in front. It seems that every hole offers a new challenge and that made for a rather entertaining round...regardless of the score. There are really no "gimmie" work hard for your score on every hole. Black Rock should be a must if you haven't played it!

Although this course is relatively well maintained and the countryside views are soothing to the soul, there is a good posibility that your scorecard will reflect the nature of the terrain at the end of your round - up and down and all over the place accompanied by a feeling of puzzlement as to why your scores were so erratic ( mine did !!). Distances are deceiving, numerous greens are wider than they are deep so approach shots on the fly must have accuracy OF distance as well as direction. Hazards are intimidating and bailout areas can catch you off guard and cause MORE trouble than the hazard you're trying to avoid ! But it IS a fun course and it DID take my mind off everything else and I DID enjoy my round (regradless of my score) and I DIDN'T have to punch the clock.! Proshop Staff were very friendly, understanding and accomodating; Cost was very reasonable with "discount books" and I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to play a challenging round of golf. p.s. bring ALL your clubs - plus that old one you don't want anymore so you can break IT instead one of your good ones when you get frustrated>

Great Price, Nice course

Pretty straight forward course. Almost every hole is up or down hill. Lots of side hill lies and some small greens. It is pretty tough to hold the greens if the weather has been dry, but the greens are in good shape and putt true.

Tough little muni

This course is disceptively (sp?) hard. I played a Pub Links qualifier here, and they had the greens rolling like concrete. Lots of 3 and 4 putts for me. Your approach shots here look visually easy, but the greens are smaller then they appear. Lots of banana greens where they are long from left to right, but narrow from front to back. Try holding an approach shot here. Not gonna happen. Under normal conditions this course won't kill you. But it's not gonna set your world on fire either. Worth a play if you are in the area, especially for the price.
