TaylorMade TP5x Review: Tour-Level Spin, Surprising Accuracy

TaylorMade's 2026 TP5x is the firmer, faster half of the five-layer TP5 family — a tour ball with three mantle layers that TaylorMade calls the Speed Gradient, built to be the fastest and lowest-spinning tour ball in the lineup.

We put TP5x through our full standardized golf ball testing at mid-90s mph swing speeds, and while in most areas the performance agreed with the marketing, there was area that surprised us.

How We Tested the TaylorMade TP5x

We put the TaylorMade TP5x through our published golf ball testing protocols using the SkyTrak ST Max launch monitor. That means human swings under strict bands for swing speed, impact quality, and delivery dynamics.

Because we use human swings, not robots, our data reflects the performance differences you can actually expect to see on the course, not microscopic variances under perfect conditions. We use strict benchmarks for swing speed, shot quality, and delivery dynamics to keep results as consistent as possible.

Individual results will vary, but the patterns we see across dozens of shots are meaningful.

TP5x ran a high-spin, high-launch driver profile in our test, easing to mid-spin, low-launch with the 7-iron and high-spin, low-launch from 50 yards. 

X-balls like TP5x typically create more spin. And even though TaylorMade says it worked to make TP5x a low-spin ball in the long game, compared to our field of 43 balls, it still qualified as high spin.

Pro V1x vs TP5x: Our Test Data Makes Your Choice Easy

Distance: 7.7/10

TP5x finished at the midpoint of the field, 21st of 43 balls in our distance test. It totaled 242.3 yards from 135.8 mph ball speed from our mid-90s test speed, with a 16.9-degree launch and a 28.8-yard apex.

TaylorMade markets the TP5x as its lowest-spinning, fastest five-layer ball, built to add up to half a club of extra distance. We didn't see that low-spin signature at mid-90s swing speeds. The 2,629 RPM of driver spin was high relative to the rest of our 43-ball field. 

That doesn't mean TaylorMade's claim isn't accurate — the Speed Gradient mantle system is designed around higher clubhead speeds, and the spin separation it's built for likely shows up more clearly above the swing speeds we tested at.

Stopping power finished 10th of 43. Rollout on our 7-iron test was 10.1 yards, with a 41.3-degree descent angle and 23.1-yard apex. That all added up to a strong top-third result in the full field.

Stopping Power is where TP5x’s higher-spin profile off the driver pays a dividend. A ball that spins more through the bag checks up faster on approach, and that's exactly what TP5x delivered here.

Wedge control is a strong category for TP5x, finishing 10th of 43 thanks to 7,231 RPM of spin and 2.4 yards of rollout in our 50-yard test.

TP5x separates from the field inside 50 yards, regardless of what the driver spin number showed.

TP5x finished 7th in our accuracy test, making accuracy its best category relative to the field. 

Driver dispersion averaged 4.0 yards offline with just 107.8 RPM of sidespin. Iron accuracy came in at 5.0 yards offline with 139.5 RPM of sidespin.

At the end of the day, that driver sidespin number is the one to remember. Whatever the launch monitor showed on total driver spin, the shots themselves came in tight — this is a ball that finds fairways.

At $57 a dozen, TP5x sits at the top of the pricing tier alongside the Chrome Tour X and Pro V1x. A value score of 6.9 reflects an average distance score and a steep price.

The accuracy and short-game numbers are strong, and those are two areas that a lot of players prioritize. But at this price point, next to balls like Bridgestone Tour B X that scored higher across the board for $3 less a dozen, TP5x has to win you over.

Who is TaylorMade TP5x For?

TP5x is for the player who values accuracy and short-game spin above raw distance. Our test found a 7th-place accuracy finish and strong wedge and stopping power numbers. For players care about more than just distance, that’s enough to look past the fact that the marketed low-spin distance advantage didn't show up clearly at mid-90s swing speeds.

If you swing significantly faster than our test speed, it’s worth testing TaylorMade's low-spin claims firsthand. But based on our data alone, TP5x's real strength is control, not distance.
