ECCO’s BIOM H4 was my favorite golf shoe of the last two years. It checked every box for me, from superior comfort to top-notch traction, unrivaled waterproof protection, and even a versatile, clean aesthetic.

So when I saw the new ECCO BIOM H5 at the PGA Show to start the year, with one bold visual enhancement, I was eager to test and review it.

That time has come. Here’s our complete, course-tested review of the ECCO BIOM H5 golf shoe.

SHOP ECCOFIND ON AMAZON
Material: ECCO-TEX waterproof membrane; ECCO Performance leather
Waterproof Warranty: 3 Years
Colors: White; Grey; Dark Grey

Pros:

  • Best waterproof warranty in golf
  • Added style via mountainous terrain that transitions the outsole to the upper
  • Built-in knit sock is a comfort upgrade
  • Breathable despite waterproof build

Cons:

  • I experienced a break-in period and blisters
  • Price is a bit of an investment

The BIOM H5 has a few distinct differences compared to its predecessor.

The most obvious is the rugged, mountainous terrain that’s designed into the outsole, which represents the Scottish Highlands. It’s a unique look, and I personally really like it.

Next, ECCO replaced the traditional tongue with a built-in knit sock, which adds comfort to the top of a shoe that was already one of the most comfortable in the space.

ECCO also tweaked the outsole to make the BIOM H5 more of an all-day shoe than the H4. The H4 had a more aggressive outsole that I wouldn’t have thought to wear to the mall, but that also delivered, in my opinion, the best traction you could find in a spikeless golf shoe.

ECCO BIOM H5 Complete Review

I walked two rounds in the BIOM H5 this spring to test how they perform in several areas, including looks, traction, waterproofing, and comfort.

Here’s how they stack up across the board.

Looks & Style

The rugged outsole that ECCO added to the BIOM H5 was a risk that paid off, in my opinion. Just about the only knock I could find on the BIOMs of years past was an underwhelming aesthetic, but I can’t say that about these H5s.

The all white edition with blue sole and trim looks modern and sleek, without selling out ECCO’s understated style. If you prefer darker, more neutral colors, you have that option as well.

Traction

The toned-down outsole on the BIOM H5 is another win for ECCO. ECCO says this new version makes the BIOM H5 an “all day” shoe that you can wear to and from the golf course, but they’re still better suited for a rainy, muddy spring round than a casual brunch. That’s a good thing.

I had no issues with the aggressive outsole on the H4, and I had just as much confidence in my traction in any conditions in them as any spiked alternative I’ve tested. Still, I don’t think taking just a little bit away from that to make the H5 more versatile does any damage to their exceptional traction.

ECCO backs the BIOM H5 with a 3-year waterproof warranty

I’ve searched high and low, and I have yet to find another golf shoe that offers a 3-year waterproof warranty. One year is standard for a “waterproof” shoe, and two years is confidence-inspiring.

Three years is elite, and when you can reasonably expect your golf shoes to last 3-5 years, that $200-plus price tag becomes much more palatable.

The ECCO-TEX (ECCO’s own version of GORE-TEX) has never failed me to date, whether it’s on these H5s or one of the other half-dozen or so ECCO shoes I’ve tested, which is why they’re my go-to for wet rounds.

Comfort & Sizing

ECCO golf shoes are known for their comfort, but that’s where the BIOM H5 let me down.

I’ve tested and reviewed around two dozen golf shoes over the last two to three years, mostly straight out of the box, and I’ve never had a break-in period with a pair of shoes.

That streak, sadly, is over.

My first round with the BIOM H5 left me with painful blisters on each heel. I actually had to take a break from the H5 while they healed. While there was noted improvement during my second round with them, there was still some nagging friction in the same spot that wasn’t far from causing more blisters.

This break-in period was easily the most shocking discovery of not only this test, but of any product I’ve tested this year. ECCO is known for comfort, and I’ve tried a handful of ECCO shoes in the past with no issue, so I never would have expected this.

I can’t ignore the fact that the BIOM H5 caused me some discomfort, but it’s also true that blistering from shoes is unique to how a specific shoe fits a specific individual’s foot. In other words, I would not expect many other people to experience this issue.

Given my past experience with ECCO, I’m optimistic the break-in period is almost over, and if that’s the case, the BIOM H5 will be at the top of the rotation.

Beyond that one issue on the heel, the BIOM H5 lives up to ECCO’s premium comfort reputation. The footbed feels excellent, they’re breathable, the upper feels great, and the sizing is spot on.

The size options somewhat take the standard US half-sizes away. I typically wear a 10.5, and the EU size 44 converts to 10-10.5, which fits comfortably.

ECCO BIOM H5 Final Verdict

The BIOM H4 was a near-perfect golf shoe, in my opinion. While ECCO made some improvements that I love with the H5 – like the design on the outsole and the built-in knit sock on top – it’s hard to look past those painful blisters.

When you consider the entire package – from the looks to the performance to the waterproofing and longevity, which add to the value – the BIOM H5 is an excellent golf shoe.
