Golf comes with plenty of challenges, not the least of which is the cost of golf clubs. The best-kept secret in golf, however, is the one place where you can save thousands of dollars on golf equipment, and still get great, name-brand clubs. Here’s how to find cheap golf clubs that will deliver all the quality your game needs.

If you were to buy a 14-club set of brand-new golf clubs off the rack from any of the major manufacturers today, you’d be looking at about a $3,000 investment, give or take. If you’re looking to spend about 1-2 percent of that – $30-$60 – you’re in the right place.

Technically, the right place is Goodwill, but we’re going to show you exactly how to save money on good golf clubs online through Goodwill.

If you’re looking for the best way to save the most money on good golf clubs, however, this is it. There are two ways to shop Goodwill online for cheap (in price only), high-quality golf clubs. You can shop directly using Goodwill Finds, or try your luck in the auctions at ShopGoodwill.com.

Goodwill Finds

Check Golf Clubs at Goodwill Finds

Goodwill Finds is probably the best starting point for searching for good, discounted golf clubs. From the Goodwill Finds homepage, use the search bar at the top to search “golf clubs.”

If you’re building a set from scratch, you’ll instantly see plenty of options, from single clubs, to small and larger bundles to build the foundation of your set.

The day we searched, we found an 8-piece set of gently used Wilson Black Jack irons for $55. That’s a downright steal.

If you’re searching for something more specific, you can use the search bar at the top to hone in your query.

If you’re just beginning at golf and not sure what to look for, here are a few tips to find a great starter set:

  • First of all, make sure the dexterity matches your needs. In our experience, pictures are more accurate than descriptions. I’ve seen plenty of clubs advertised as right-handed, with pictures of left-handed clubs, and so far, the pictures have not lied.
  • Always check the shipping costs before you fall in love with a price. Depending on your shipping address and the store you order from, shipping costs could be prohibitive. You can use the filters to select the closest stores to your region to cut down on shipping costs.
  • If you’re looking for a starter set, you don’t need every club in the bag. A set that includes eight or nine of the following will get you going just fine: Driver, 3 or 5 wood, hybrid, 7-9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge, putter.
  • If you’re a beginner, look for cavity-back irons. These are perimeter-weighted and will give you the best results even when you miss the center of the club face.

Check Golf Clubs at Shop Goodwill

Believe it or not, Goodwill Finds is not the only online destination for finding great Goodwill items. There’s an alternative with even greater saving potential, but it comes with some drawbacks.

Instead of finding and purchasing what you’re looking for through Goodwill Finds, you can use Shop Goodwill at ShopGoodwill.com and bid on golf clubs.

Yes, the savings can be greater, but the roller coaster of waiting hours, or even days, for your auction to end, and being out-bid at the very end is not for the faint of heart.

If you’re patient and persistent, however, the reward can be worth it. We found a 7-piece set of used Titleist irons with a current bid of just $14. Yes, for $2-a-club, you can throw a set of Titleist irons in the bag. A little elbow grease to scrub the heads, and perhaps a fresh set of grips, and they’ll look and feel like new in no time.

One great thing about Shop Goodwill is you can set your maximum bid, but the bid only increases at the minimum rate, usually $1.

If you’re going to use Shop Goodwill to find the cheapest possible golf clubs, here are a few tips from our experience:

  • Before you set your maximum bid, check the cost of shipping to your address, and determine your total budget for the club, as shipping costs can add up quickly.
  • If you need help determining a club’s value, use the PGA Value Guide to make sure you’re getting a good deal.
  • If you see a deal that seems too good to be true, accept that somebody else will probably find it too, and the bidding war could kill the buzz. Every once in a while, however, you’re the only one to find that deal and you walk away with a steal.

The Pros & Cons of Shop Goodwill

Cons

Potential for the best deals in golf equipment

Excitement of winning a bid and hitting a golf club “Jackpot”

Clubs need to be washed and maybe re-gripped

Alternatives to Goodwill

Not everybody wants to get their golf clubs from Goodwill. Or maybe you’re upgrading from the set you that you got from Goodwill. No problem. There are plenty of great alternatives. Some get you brand new clubs, some are used, but they’re all cheap – in price only.

Direct to Consumer

Direct to Consumer (DTC) golf club makers are more popular than ever, and you have a full menu of options to choose from. Do you want the lowest priced clubs you’d actually want to play? Try a DTC brand like Bombtech.

Do you want a low-priced complete set that will work for you? Stix is a great option for that.

Are you looking for tour-quality clubs that you’ll want to keep forever, but at a fraction of the competition? Sub 70 is your best bet.

Many of these brands offer even bigger discounts on used clubs from their lineups, which is just one more way to save money on great golf clubs.

Here’s are a few Direct To Consumer golf club manufacturers to check out.

Callaway Golf Preowned

Shop Callaway Golf Preowned

Callaway Golf Preowned is one of the most popular destinations on the internet for affordable golf clubs, and there are two reasons for that. You always know you’re getting name-brand equipment that’s in good condition, and you know you’re getting it at a great price.

Despite the name, Callaway Golf Preowned offers more than just Callaway products, and it’s a great place to shop for discounts on recent models as well as clubs from 10-plus years ago.

Golf Galaxy Used Demo Clubs

Shop Golf Galaxy Used Demo Clubs

If you’re looking to save some coin and add some of the latest and greatest golf equipment to your bag, the used demo club offerings from Golf Galaxy just may be your best bet.

Most clubs are marked down about 40% from original retail prices, give or take. Don’t be nervous about these clubs being demoed. Most, if not all of them, have never been hit outdoors, and the mileage on a demo club is less than what you’d get with a used club that was somebody’s everyday gamer for a few years. On top of that, there’s an extra layer of security when you buy from a reputable chain like Golf Galaxy.

2nd Swing

Shop 2nd Swing

In recent years, 2nd Swing has become a powerhouse in second-hand golf equipment. It's got everything you need, from low-priced oldies-but-goodies, to discounted clubs from the latest release cycle, and everything in between.

Play It Again Sports

Shop Play It Again Sports

Play It Again Sports is another must-check if you’re on the hunt for cheap used golf clubs. You never know what you’re going to find at Play It Again Sports, and like both of the Goodwill sites above, if you’re persistent, you’ll find some exciting hidden gems.

Also like the Goodwill sites above, be sure to check the shipping costs to your specific address before you decide if a deal really is too good to pass up.

Rock Bottom Golf

Shop Rock Bottom Golf

Rock Bottom Golf offers the best of all worlds. From discounts on new clubs to bargain preowned and open box returns, you’ll find whatever your looking for at Rock Bottom Golf.

On top of all that, you’ll find shoes, balls, and accessories to make sure you hit the course with everything you need, and some spare change in your pocket.

Amazon Golf Clubs

Check Amazon Golf Clubs

If you’re looking to spend anywhere from $20 to $2,000 on golf clubs, there’s only one place to shop: Amazon.

Pick your price, and browse the options available in your budget. Rest assured, whether you’re looking for the very lowest prices, regardless of the brand, or the best prices from the most reputable brands, Amazon has plenty of options to choose from.

Costco Golf Clubs by Kirkland Signature

Shop Kirkland Signature Golf

If you need 14 of something, Costco is the place to go. Since you need 14 golf clubs, why not check Costco?

All jokes aside, Costco’s in-house brand, Kirkland Signature has shaken up the golf industry in recent years with its half-the-price (or better) equipment that delivers 90-plus percent of the performance.

Costco’s golf boom started with golf balls, and has since evolved into a premium, $100 putter, and beautiful 3-piece wedge set that retails for $169. Kirkland Signature irons briefly appeared on the USGA’s conforming club list in early 2023, and they looked every bit as savory as the best irons in the game today. If those come to retail, expect a consumer-friendly price tag, and like Kirkland Signature’s other golf equipment, expect the demand to far outweigh the supply.

A Penny Saved

It’s easy to bemoan the astronomical costs of golf equipment these days. The better option, however, is to take control of the situation. You don’t have to be robbed blind just to play decent golf equipment. If you look in the right places, you’ll find some satisfyingly great deals on golf equipment.
