What Are the Golf Swing Fundamentals?

Golf swing fundamentals all start with the basic techniques that set you up for a great swing and a solid shot. If you find your golf swing going awry, always come back to the fundamentals to get you back on track.

The Grip

Correct positioning of the club in the grip is key to a good swing. Most beginners place the club shaft in the palm of the hands, when actually it should be placed diagonally across the fingers of the left hand, using a light pressure grip.

Stance

Correct positioning of the feet relative to the ball at address will also contribute to a good set-up. Feet should be spread about shoulder-width apart when using the driver.

Alignment

Alignment refers to your body being aimed correctly toward the target. Always square your club and ball parallel to the target.

Ball Position

When using the driver, place the ball just off your left heel. As you use shorter clubs, move the ball toward the center.

Pre-shot Routine

Standing behind the ball, study the primary and intermediate target and picture in your mind the line of flight. Take a few practice swings, step into the shot, check the target and swing.
