Hi, my name is Mariano Bartolome, and I am a Master Instructor at the Jim McLean Golf School at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. Today I am going to give you a drill that will help you to improve the lag in your swing. The only thing that we need for this drill is just a shaft or a club. We are going to turn it upside down and grip it only with the right hand right where the shaft starts. From that position I am going to get into a normal setup, leave the club a few inches above the ground and I am going to put my left hand on top of my chest. From that position I am going to get my feet together, make a full coil in my backswing and as you can see my left shoulder is turned behind the ball, I have a beautiful coil from there and the thing that I am going to do now is take a step forward and let the club swing through into my finish. Feet together, full coil, step, go. When I finish in that position my shaft should be resting on top of my left shoulder, my body is balanced on my finish and what it really helps to create is lag on the downswing. I get into my backswing and by doing that step forward I am getting the proper sequence of motion by getting the shift, rotation and you can see how my right arm and shaft are keeping that angle that we need in order to hit the ball with power. If you hear any whistle of the shaft that should be produced always after impact. It should never look like throwing or casting the club, a very common mistake we see with the students that come to see us. We need to keep that angle and release the club right after impact. Try this drill; it will help you to get lag, power and better release.
