Hope that Oakhurst comes back better than ever after being resuscitated after the 2016 flooding.

This was a fun afternoon. They were still in the midst of some upgrades/renovations during out visit last May (2007), but everyone was very nice and my wife and I had a great time. Playing with the period golf clubs and balls added an extra measure of fun. For anyone that loves golf, this is a great time to explore its history. I came away with a much greater appreciation for my modern clubs. This is a perfect side/afternoon trip if you are staying at The Greenbier in White Sulpher Springs.

Oakhurst Links - the oldest golf course in the United States

Oakhurst Links, near White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, was built circa 1884 and is the oldest existing golf course in the United States. The GolfLink description gives the construction date as 1994, but this is the date the course re-opened after a restoration supervised by Bob Cupp. Oakhurst is unique in that it has in fact been restored, as nearly as possible, to how it actually was in the 1880s -down to the sheep grazing the fairways. Modern golf equipment is not allowed for play at Oakhurst. 19th century equipment -reproduction clubs and balls- are available at the clubhouse. Playing Oakhurst is singular, in that the player is truly immersed in a total 19th century golfing experience. I'd have to say that for someone interested in golf history, a visit to Oakhurst is as necessary as a visit to the Old Course at St. Andrews - you simply will not believe it until you have seen and played it. Par, incidentally, is 37, not 34.
