A beautiful course. Very challenging ... VERY challenging. I play from the white tees, which are a 140 slope. God help anyone hitting from the blues or the backs. The fairways are wide, but there's almost no room once you hit the rough - it very quickly turns into very tall unplayable rough, or water. The routing, with a par 34 on the back, is a little odd, but fun. Only 1 par 3 is challenging (the last one) ... the rest are definite scoring holes. Staff is wonderful, and the practice range is extraordinary. Unwalkable. I am local, and a member at Connoquenessing across the street, but with the cost and the frustration factor I'll probably keep my visits to once a year here. But it's a *fun* once-a-year.

Wow! Where do I begin? First of all, let's review the most important element; the course. This is an awesome track with dramatic elevation changes, perfect fairways, lighting quick greens, and a beautiful setting. The $150 greens fee is fair considering the quality of the practice range and course conditions. Without going into too much detail, I was immensely challenged. This is a course that requires a couple of rounds just to figure out what to do. The huge elevation changes make every shot extremely deceptive. I made so many wrong club selections, it became comical. I'm an 8 handicap and struggled to shoot 90 from the Medieval tees, and I left the 18th green feeling like i hadn't played in years. Now on to the second part of my review; the club house. For such a great golf course, I've never seen a more absurd facility. One arrives at this course at the front door of an enormous concrete block castle that looks like its design was stolen from a bad cartoon. This medieval theme is carried out inside and even in the restaurant, where servers are dressed in 15th century costumes. What the...??? Nothing could ruin the landscape any worse than this horrible piece of Disney architecture. If the owner put less emphasis on this farcical medieval fantasy, and focused more on an inviting structure, I'd rank this course as one of the best I've ever played. However, the two go hand-in-hand. This course is like a modern tuxedo but with ski boots for a club house...completely inappropriate.

Hidden Gem

Possibly overshadowed by Oakmont, this is an amazing course. From the moment you get out of your car you are treated like a member. The course is amazingly well kept. The front nine is more flat and set along the river. The back nine is the real treat. You are literally in the giant hills of Elwood City. Thirteen is famous for its thirteen bunkers. Some of the tee boxes are over fifty feet above the green. I truly believe that this is a bargain as well. At $150, it is much cheaper that TPC at Sawgrass ($355) and Pebble Beach (~$500). I know that this is a relatively young course, but I hope that it eventually climbs up higher in the best in America list because I truly believe it belongs near the top.
