Famed architect Walter J. Travis (1862-1927) designed the Yahnundasis course. Travis who was a three-time US Amateur Champion and the 1904 British Amateur Champion designed many famous course including Westchester Country Club (Harrison, NY), the Onondaga Country Club (Syracuse, NY), Orchard Park (Buffalo, NY), Round Hill (Greenwich CT), Jekyll Island and Sea Island golf courses in Georgia.

The current course was constructed in 1924. In 1956, it was the site of an exhibition match featuring Arnold Palmer (65) and Ken Venturi (66) and two local pros - Gene Coghill the Yahnundasis Club Pro and Carroll Armstrong (Higby Hills). I was a very interested 13-year old and I remember almost every shot!

This very beautiful course plays over rolling hills with a meandering stream winding its way through the back nine. The course has many interesting architectural features of the early 20th century including small greens with chocolate drops all around. As with most Northeastern, courses the greens are comprised of bent grass with lots of poa. This means that they are great to play in the morning but very bumpy in the evening as the poa grows faster than the bent. The fairways are bluegrass and you will get a lost of fliers as the fairways are not cropped very short.

I believe that Palmer’s 65 in 1956 is still the course record and the member’s record is 67, shot by Dr. Arthur Middlemen in 1970. Both rounds played from the back tees, which stretched to 7,000 yards with the old dead ball of that period.

Yahnundasis has hosted numerous local, regional and statewide championships and stand up to the best of amateur play.

You will enjoy playing this grand old lady.
