Pine Valley Golf Link in Pelham is a nice golfer's surprise.

This course is just over 2,800 yards, but it is much more than you would expect from the typical nine-hole golf course. There are hazards on every hole and the design requires a little thought on each shot. Don't let the half size fool you into thinking this is an easy course; this little gem packs a punch with a 125 slope rating.

Some nine-hole courses are difficult because they aren't properly maintained. That is not the case at Pine Valley. The bent grass fairways look great and are well cared for. The greens aren't too fast or too slow so you can play an accurate line (but the hole placements can be pretty tricky!).

Many of the holes are on the short side, but the greens are quite small so your approach shot needs to be accurate. The par-3 second hole is certainly a challenge and is followed by the only par-5 hole on the course, the 510-yard third hole. You'll finish your round with a short par-3, which could save a tough day and have you putting for birdie.

This semi-private golf club also offers a full driving range, putting green and chipping green. A small restaurant and bar on site have good food and company after your round is over.

The laid-back feel of the course isn't for those looking for a country club ambience, but it is welcoming to families or anyone looking to unwind on the links. Given the family feel at Pine Valley, there can be a bit of a wait on holes, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Playing a round of 18 holes (the nine holes played twice) is a fair value. You walk and play 18 holes for between $20 and $30 depending on the day of the week.

The owners and staff at Pine Valley are very friendly and welcoming which, again, is a different feel from some of the country clubs in the area.

Give Pine Valley a try - we think you will come back for more.
