Great Course near the casinos in Biloxi. The course is very scenic and has NO development on it, just nature and golf. Unfortunately it was very wet so the course wasnt in the best condition that day. But overall I liked this course and will play it again. Also the service was excellent.

Voyage to "The Preserve" in Vancleave, MS

The Preserve is an outstanding design with exceptional service and a desire to make your day the best day of golf ever; unfortunately it is a little bit overpriced for the MS Gulf Coast area, in my opinion, but an exceptional experience.

I am a 10 Handicapper. I play with a Nike Sasquatch driver, a Cleveland VAS V-S 3-wood, an Adams Golf Tight-lies 5-wood, Hogan forged Apex Plus irons and Cleveland Tour Action Wedges. I live near Biloxi, MS.

Getting there:
The Preserve is located directly of off Highway 57 just north of I-10. Although not completed as of yet (DEC 06) it looks to be a very scenic front entrance with limestone block signs and a well manicured access road. You will also cross a very “spiffy” bridge where you get a hint of some of the holes through low spots in the mounds to your left. This is just a tease for the rest of the course, a wetting of the appetite so to speak. There are no houses or buildings seen from the course except those related to the golf experience. Coming around the bend you will find a brand new stately club house facility that matches the entrance. A large Acadian style clubhouse with limestone fronting and a very classic feel that makes you think of places much farther north.

The Welcome:
Every time I have been there, I have immediately been greeted by helpful staff. James sticks out in my mind, as I have met him multiple times now and he is always extremely nice, helpful and talkative about any subject you could want to talk about.

Paying the Ransom:
As of this writing, the course is still in a temporary trailer to one side, but that is going to change soon once the club house is complete. Here is my one big hang up with the course; it is $90.00 flat fee, including tax, to play until 2 PM. After 2 PM it is only $70.00, but that is still high for the local area. Most courses in the local area in the same category are around $20 less. Currently there are also no constant play or membership deals. They would, in my opinion, do well to offer a card program like Shell Landing with a one time fee to purchase a card that allows cheaper play (say $40 weekdays, $45 weekends) for one year. It would both increase play and reward those who would choose to be constant players on the course.

The Practice Facilities:
The range/practice complex is outstanding. The range itself is well constructed with multiple target greens and a wonderful view of the 18th finishing green. Range balls are provided as part of the cost of play. The practice green is firm and consistent with the course greens as well as being large enough for 20 plus people to comfortably putt on at the same time. A feature I find to be extremely appealing is the Chipping green that is just to the rear of the putting green. It has caches of balls for you to practice your short chips and bunker shots, which you will need to do well while playing The Preserve.

The Greens:
The Preserve at this time is still a relatively new course. The greens are built to USGA spec and are well compacted. All the greens are extremely consistent in their firmness and roll. They are not rock hard, but hard as a drum might be a good description. They are cut tight and at a guess a 10/11 on the stimp meter. They accept high, long iron shots well with minimal roll. With shorter iron shots, you need to be wary to hit down on the ball, for back spin, as well as playing to a spot forward of the pin location otherwise your ball might roll off the green. Bump and runs from the fringes and short range (less then 40 yards) are possible on some of the holes and tend towards good results. Chips if not lofted and soft will run forever. Special attention needs to be made to hit on a flat or only slightly sloped location, with the speed of the greens, a sideways kick on landing could destroy your chance at an up and down.

Overall Playability:
The course is a wonderful mixture of strategic and target golf
