I am a big fan of Northwest. Though it definitely favors the guy who hit left-to-right out of the tee box. The course plays long, and is very well maintained. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I tend to play during the week, so play goes quickly. I have played a recent Saturday, and had no issues with slow play. But I am sure that this can be a problem here - muni on a weekend.

In short, I am a BIG fan. Really enjoy my rounds at Northwest.

I played here yesterday. This is a course for advanced beginners. Not for Pros. It's very long to play. You can practice your tee shots and fairway wood shots. Not a hilly at all. No water. The club house is a bit old. Not a best Montgomery county course. Hampshire Green is better.

All things considered, Northwest is probably the best Muni in the DC area, if not all of Maryland. Every golfer will have fun here because the course is so versitile. One negative could be slow play (see post below), but when I went here on a Sunday in Mid-May it was not bad at all (comparitively) and the rangers were definitely enforcing good pace of play.

Northwest can be as difficult as you want it to be. You won't find any forced carries, sneaky hazards or blind shots here, but Northwest plays as much as 7,400 yards (one of the longest in MD) from the tips. I cannot drive the ball more than about 260 and I never had a problem getting to a green in regulation. I gave 4 stars for difficulty because of its length, and because the course can play extremely difficult if there is wind or if the rough is thick.

An interesting aspect of the course is it's history. The course was built in the 60's and it has been generally untouched since. This is proof that the course plays very fair to its long yardage; imagine hitting woodies into those 450+ yd par 4's. Also there is not a house in sight when you're on the course which, for me at least, is another huge bonus of any course within a 30 minute drive of DC.

Basically if you are on the Montgomery County Golf website (which is terrible if you want detailed course info.) and you're trying to decide which of the 9 or so MoCo Muni's to try, pick Northwest. It is definitely worth at least checking out once, but I garuntee that one round here will keep you coming back.

Two separate fights between players at the course. Four different groups playing on the same hole. The marshal did nothing to fix these problems. Would have liked to focus on my game rather than who was going to fight next.

This course is great whether you are a beginner or a pro. The course is almost always in good shape and they are always nice people including the staff and golfers.

Play like pros

Northwest offers the regular golfer the feel of the distance the PGA players play. The pars 5's are not more than average but the 3's and 4's will make you use all the clubs you have. On the front nine the 3's from the tips are 220 and 233 yards. They play slightly downhill but that does not help as much as you may think.
Number 2 is my favorite hole on the course. 440+ downhill par 4 that I have played my second shot with everthing from a sand wedge to a 5 iron.
The best thing about the course is that you can go full out on your drives and still stay out of trouble, just be left with a lot of yardage to go. It is worth every penny.

Great course for the money... But Loooong...

I really enjoy playing this course... The staff are great, and the course generally is in pretty good shape. The only beef I have is the sand/dirt in the bunkers... They need to replace the dirt with real bunker sand... Pace of play tends to be pretty slow, but that's becoming a way of life on most courses... The course if VERY long, even from the middle tees. But it won't beat you up... All in all, I really enjoy playing it...
