Played North 9 then the East 9 on a very hot June Saturday. The East course was not as punishing as the North course, but the East course was not in great shape on this day. The greens were fine, but the fairways need quite a bit of work. They are not in good shape at all. Many barren spots.

Of all the four 9s at Compasspoint this one seems the least brutal but is still a strong layout. Though not as linksy as the North course it still offers plenty of room on most holes and is not as claustrophobic or as penal as the West. The opening hole is a drivable par 4 and fairly easy hole. #2 brings in some choices off the tee with a fade fairway with water hard right all the way to the green -- risk/reward, the more water you bite off the shorter your approach -- probably the best hole on the East. #3 is a nice par 3 built high above the water's edge. #4 is a par 5 but you must lay-up off the tee 220 yards to avoid a waste area. From there you still can't see the green but can trust a long iron to prep for a shot under 100 yards to a large, heavily bunkered green. #5 is a very tough par 4 with a blind pond over the mounds to the right. You must stay left. Even with a healthy drive it will take a long iron to get home to a severely sloped green. Anything above the pin is in 3-putt territory, there's no stopping it. #7 and #9 are tight but short dogleg par 4s to be respected. For damp and cold March conditions the course was very playable. #8 is a tough par 5, especially uphill and into the wind. Water to the left will swallow a drive so that is the most worrisome shot on the hole. Survive the tee shot and it's wide open but the two-tiered green is very severe and will surely cause some three-putts. I played for $35 just after 12 noon and my 11-year-old son played free. Check for good rates when available.
