Prevailing southeastern ocean wind can howl at you. I generally hit the ball too high, which is no way to play this course. The course gets progressively more difficult as you play. The first three holes are down-wind, then you turn 180° directly into it, on the slightly up-hill par 5 and you remember why you made the trip to play here. 4, 5 play along the Atlantic; absolutely fabulous views. 4 is a great golf hole. 5 is the one that lies beside the lighthouse - a just ok hole, made great by it's location and scenery. 6 is a neat little par three. The first thing I thought of when I saw the green was the postage stamp at Troon (hole 8). Holes 7 and 8 are forgettable. Hole 9 is a 286 yard par 4, which plays like a 400-yarder into the wind. It's a great use of mother nature to get the most out of that space.

Holes 10 and 11 are GREAT! 12, 13, 14 are nothing fabulous. 15's pretty good. 16 kind of sucks. 17's pretty good and 18's just ok. Holes 10 and 11 are the best two on the back. I'll shut up now about this course, but it's worth the trip.

Santaky on a beautiful autumn day

Played Sankaty in late October. Beautiful sunny day with a fresh breeze, but not extremely windy. What a nice course to walk. This is the way golf was meant to be played. Beautiful layout, just hard enough and the beauty of the ocean, and the lighthouse. Greens were great, but you must stay below the hole. Also, keep it out of the fescue. One of my favorite courses! It reminds me of SHINNECOCK HILLS G.C.
