Course Reviews

Another good review here http://theurbangolfer.net/course-reviews/2011/1/20/thunderhawk-golf-club-course-review.html?SSScrollPosition=0

Maybe the top public course in northern IL. A challenging Robert Trent Jones, Jr. layout that is usually in great shape. Has the feel of a high end course without the outrageous prices or exclusive atmosphere. Some holes are a little quirky (A RTJJ staple), but overall it is very playable from the correct set of tees. Maybe I keep catching it on the wrong day, but the greens don't seem as fast as I would expect (or like). Other than that they have great facilities and many ways to get discounted rates if you are on a budget. Highly recommend, along with Shepherd's Crook, to anyone in the area.

This course is a tremendous value if played in spring of Fall. It's a challenging golf experience with just enough in the amenities department to make this a really great course in my book.

There are some real challenges here and some very beautiful holes. This has become one of my favorite courses in Illinois.

I've only played here twice, but never had a exceptionally long round or faced poor conditions. Staff was perfectly nice and they have everything you could want in the pro shop and cafe, even coolers of beer to take with, though $20 was a lot for a sixer of Bud.

Check it out yourself, especially on one of those Indian Summer days in October where you can play it for like $35.

UPDATE: Played again. Just a wonderful golf course. Challenging, but fair and very tranquil. The rough was a bit much at times. There's something about the course that is very beautiful, relaxing and great fun to play. You can play it for as little as $39 m-th and $55 twilight on weekends.

If you play this one in spring or fall you'll save! Great course. Well conditioned with beautiful and tranquil setting. Good greens, fairways and tees. WARNING: Don't play from any of rear tees unless you are less than a 10 otherwise you'll only slow down play and resent this course for the rest of your life. Please repair your ball marks and divots as this is a special course for the game in the Chicago Area. UPDATE: JUST PLAYED THUNDERHAWK TODAY AND I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS GREAT TRACK. TEES, FAIRWAYS AND GREENS WERE IN BELOW AVERAGE CONDITION. I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT IN SUCH A STATE OF DECLINE!!!

OVERRATED! I love it when I come to a par 3 and there are 4 groups waiting to tee off before me.

Thunderhawk is one of the few public courses in the Chicago area that isn't surrounded by a housing development. (There are a few homes near the first and tenth tees.) The course itself is a very scenic and very well-manicured prairie course. The fairways are extra wide, a pleasant departure from the narrow tree-lined fairways of nearby parkland courses. Unfortunately one of the course rangers is quite unpleasant, but everyone else seems nice.

This course is very nice but between the high price, the exceptionally rude/unhelpful staff and layout (a few blind holes make first time play frustrating,)the scenery just can't make up for it. It's nice, but killer on the pocket book. And again, not only myself but others have had rude encounters with a snooty staff who think (keep in mind it's a public course) they're doing you a favor by letting you play on their course. I've gotten kicked off with the sun well in the sky for twilight and had rude course workers simply checking in to golf. Unfortunate for a beautiful course. (check out Shepherd's Crook for another Zion public course of much better value)

Nice!

VERY VERY nice public course.
A must play in my opinion.
