Course Reviews

Decided to drive up to Santa Barbara and spend the July 4th weekend and golf. Sandpiper was #1 on my list. I am a member of Torrey Pines and a 4.0 hdcp. I shot 78. The layout on this course was nice but the condition of the course was a 5 out of 10. For $200.00 this is not what I expected. We have a muni I play for $35.00 that is just as good. Being July there was no excuse for the poor condition of this course. From what I seen this is common for this facility. IMHO this place is way over hyped. The $80.00 afternoon rate is what I would recommend. and don't get your hopes up.

The scenary is spetacular. The course is long for a high handicppr but the course was in great shape when I played in March. The greens are rock hard but rolled true. You have to land your approach shot high and soft or your rolling off the green. High priced but you are paying for a great course in an expensive locale. Also the great views alone are worth $50 a round.

Course was very dry around greens and in spots around the fairways. Greens were rock hard and shots not hit perfect did not hold . I was disappointed overall. When I pay $150 for a round of golf I expect more than what i received today.

some one must have played a bad round to speak so badly about this course. though it is a high cost course. it is got some of the funnest holes to play. i enjoyed the entire course. i played it with no wind so i got it good. would go back again. it would be easier to play if it was less expensive. but it is Santa Barbra what do you expect!

Even by municipal course standards, the tees and fairways were in awful condition. Not only that, but there were many extremely wet spots on the course and water in some of the fairways and bunkers.

The putting greens were near perfect though. They were extremely fast and extremely smooth.

It took me four hours to play and I started at 10:15 AM on a Sunday morning. The marshal kept the pace of play moving quite well, moving me in front of one slower group. $140 for a course that is in crappy shape is just a rip off though. The other courses around the SB area are much cheaper and most are in better shape.

Very nice course, with great views of the ocean, but the price is not right.

Sandpiper in Santa Barbara was very dissappointing. Lots of hype for what was not a good value. I played there in mid Sept, 2007, and to say it was in average condition is kind. Fairways were dry throughout and had several very dry spots and many types of gr@$!*% growing. These ranged from rye to kikuyu to bermuda and some poa in the wetter spots. Aprons were especially dissappointing: Some were soft and wet, others very hard; knowing how to roll the ball on the green was a matter of guesswork for a golfer new to the course. The greens were smooth and had a consistent stint speed of around 8-9, but they were also irregular in thier abiltiy to hold a shot. Some would bounce, other would bite. Who knew?

The design of the front nine was also very bland. Might as well have been in Fresno. The back side, however, was much more fun. Conditions were not much different, but holes 10, 11 and 12 had nice ocean contact and good elevation change to make them fun. Holes 14 and 15 were right along the cliffs and provided plenty of challenge and intimidation, more like what was advertised.

Overall, though, the poor condition and lack of interest on the non-ocean holes, made the high cost of play ($120 mid week and $140 on weekends, plus cart) a poor value.

Would a lot of winter rain help? Undoubtedly. But then management should not profess that best months for playing the course are Sept and Oct, after the end of a long dry spell!
