Should you use a face-balanced putter? Well, that completely depends on your putting stroke.

Face-balanced putters best serve golfers with a straight-back, straight-through stroke with little to no arc. If that sounds like you, then our list of the best face-balanced putters could help you sink more putts.

With any putter purchase, you should be confident in your flat stick. Your putter is the most-used club in your bag, so feel is important. That said, it can really benefit your game to evaluate the technology in your putter as well. Much like playing the correct shaft in your driver, a face-balanced putter helps you make a consistent, accurate stroke on each putt. To help marry your stroke and your putter, these are the 10 best face-balanced putters of 2022.

The Best Face Balanced Putters

After testing 158 different putters, we noted which were face-balanced and which were toe-hang models. A few dozen face-balanced putters felt great, but we wanted to narrow it down to the very best of the best so you can put them to the test yourself.

Six manufacturers produce the eight face-balanced putters that stand out above the rest. Without brand bias, we put these putters to the test and studied accuracy, distance control, stability, and much more. Ultimately, three key components factored into our final list.

Face Rotation

The hallmark trait of a great face-balanced putter is how much the face opens and closes throughout your putting stroke. Players with high arc in their stroke should avoid face-balanced putters altogether and look for a blade putter with toe hang.

For those with a straight stroke, you should have no problem keeping a face-balanced putter stable and the face square to the ball throughout your stroke. To really test how well each face-balanced putter performed, we lined our path with tees to ensure we “kept the train on the tracks” with these putters. Ultimately, the putters we selected for this list were the easiest to keep square and stable throughout the stroke

Head Shape

It was important to us that the putter shape was purpose-driven, not designed for flair or just to be different. We personally like looking down at each of these eight putters, and felt more confidence compared to other putters.

Head to Shaft Connection

In this face-balanced genre of putters you’ll find a number of different ways the shaft is attached to the putter head. Some shafts have two bends, some are connected at the heel, and some are center-shafted. The aesthetic of this part of the putter’s construction was crucial for us and in some cases, impossible to ignore.

What Makes it Great No doubt alignment, just hit it
What Could be Better Price

TaylorMade is several generations deep into Spider putters and this line performs beautifully. We had the current model, the Spider GT, in our top-15 of the best mallet putters, but it's our clear-cut No.1 face-balanced putter.

Once we tested the Spider GT on actual grass, it made complete sense to us why it’s one of the most popular clubs on professional tours. It’s incredibly stable throughout the putting stroke and assisted us with great distance control, even on putts we purposely missed on the toe and heel. Alignment-wise, just drop the head behind the ball and don’t second guess. This Spider is incredibly simple to get squared up, which gives you an extra boost of confidence.

Our only gripe is that the price of Spiders keeps going up, with this current edition standing at $350. It’s a little steep, but the performance of the Spider GT makes a strong argument that it could be worth every penny.

What Makes it Great Familiar design, new technology
What Could be Better A little too skippy at impact

The Odyssey 2-Ball Ten is the first of three putters on this list from Odyssey. We really like this putter because it adds a touch of old school flair with the classic two-ball alignment, but it also has modern weighting and materials which make it lighter and more accurate.

The black-to-white contrast stood out to us and made it visually simple to get set behind the ball. Try testing this model with Odyssey’s Stroke Lab shaft, which is designed to further help with the straight path of the head and get you into a better position at impact.

What Makes it Great Custom feel, custom look
What Could be Better Fringe putt accuracy

If you’ve read any of our other “best of” putter articles, you’ll know that we really like Toulon Design’s offerings. These putters are the premium end of the Odyssey family and deliver the goods in every way.

The Toulon Design Las Vegas DB feels like a custom, one-of-one putter. It’s Toulon’s take on the popular winged design head, with craftsmanship that pays attention to every detail. The double bend model was really close to taking our best overall for this category had it not lacked, just slightly, when we tested it from the fringe and off-green scenarios. Nonetheless, the Las Vegas DB is no gamble if you’re shopping in the higher price range.

What Makes it Great Soft insert, great feedback
What Could be Better Initial roll off of face

Not to be confused with the 2-Ball Ten, we bring you the Odyssey 2-Ball Eleven. If we’re playing favorites between the two, we’re giving the edge to the Eleven, but it’s close.

The 2-Ball Eleven has one of the sleekest head designs we’ve seen from Odyssey. The way that it’s rounded out in certain areas makes it easy on the eyes while also putting the main concentration on the 2-ball alignment aid, as it should be. The insert feels closer to the original White Hot insert, which is very soft and very responsive depending on how much speed you want to give it. As with other Odyssey models, we tested the 2-Ball Eleven with a Stroke Lab shaft, which made it incredibly easy to consistently keep on the line.

What Makes it Great Value and performance
What Could be Better Stock headcover

Tour Edge stepped up its putter game in 2022 with a huge expansion of its Wingman series. We even chose the standard model, the Wingman 701, as our most forgiving putter in 2022. In the face-balanced category, we’re all about the Exotics Wingman 706.

Admittedly, we’re not crazy about center-shafted putters. This putter, however, reinvented the shaft-to-head connection for us, which we didn’t expect. This is a mini-mallet design, and the smaller head paired together with the center shaft seamlessly. It rolled true and, like the 701, was deadly accurate. There are six putters under the Wingman umbrella and we suggest trying all of them to see which fits you best.

What Makes it Great Price and overall look
What Could be Better Not easily accessible for testing

Sub 70 Golf continues to roll along in the golf industry, creating products that are as good as anything else out there. Combine that with direct-to-consumer pricing and Sub 70 is dangerous in the most awesome way.

The company produces fully milled putters that fly under the radar as far as value and performance go. In the face-balanced category, we loved the Sycamore 003 putter, which is offered in a double bend option and a toe-hang edition if you have some arc in your stroke. If you're shopping for a putter to match your straight back, straight through stroke, make sure you select the face-balanced, double bend edition of the 003 Sycamore.

The appearance of this putter is all business with a black head, black shaft, and black grip. The stark white alignment lines on the top of the putter pop off the club head and this was one of the best-performing putters we tested outside of 30 feet.

The only thing we felt could be better is just a byproduct of Sub 70 having insanely good pricing, and that’s the fact that, mostly, you can't just walk into a store and try it out. Sub 70 does, however, offer a demo program which we recommend if you’re not crazy about jumping in head first.

What Makes it Great SeeMore’s RST Alignment
What Could be Better Black finish shows wear and tear

More than any other putter brand, SeeMore is truly one you must try to fully appreciate. The company’s patented Rifle Scope Technology is a thing of genius. When the shaft hides the red dot at the heel of the putter head, voila, your face is square and your shaft angle is perfect.

The SeeMore FGP Black putter is based on the original SeeMore design, which Payne Stewart and Zach Johnson used to win major championships. It’s a fairly simple blade design but it is face-balanced to promote a much easier stroke. We love how all SeeMore putters feel exceptional at impact with the perfect combination of soft milling and responsive feel. If your stroke calls for a face-balanced putter but you're not crazy about mallet putters, give the SeeMore FGP Black a few rolls.

What Makes it Great Great middle ground between blade and mallet
What Could be Better Price

We finish our list of the best face-balanced putters with the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K Triple Wide. We know it’s a mouthful, but you’ll be the one mouthing off to your playing partners when you’re dropping birdies.

This putter is the perfect blend of a blade and a mallet. It marries a traditional blade look with a wider body that covers more ground. Unlike other Odyssey putters on this list, we actually preferred the Triple Wide with a stepped steel shaft as opposed to the Stroke Lab shaft, which Odyssey also offers. Perhaps it was the additional weighting, but we felt it was much easier to avoid pushing and pulling putts with the steel shaft.

The $400 price tag is a bit much, in our opinion, because that puts it in the same ballpark as a Toulon Design putter and the likes.

Our Rigorous Testing Process

In order to provide you, the GolfLink reader, the most accurate and trustworthy lists of the best putters in every category, GolfLink staff writer Todd Mrowice personally tested 158 different putters from 22 different manufacturers, stroking – by his count – 3,160 putts in a roughly 30-day span. His testing took him to multiple manufacturer headquarters, practice putting greens, and big box retailers.

As a result of Todd’s extensive hands-on testing, you get honest, first-hand feedback on how almost every putter available stacks up to the competition, and which golfers each putter benefits. We also hope Todd has managed to save a stroke or two from all that putting practice.

Conclusion

We hope that you learned a thing or two about face-balanced putters, because we know that we did. This testing process taught us just how many great face-balanced putters are out there, in a variety of head shapes, weighting, and styles.

We expected brands like Odyssey to have more than a single pick prior to testing, but were pleasantly surprised with brands like Sub 70 and SeeMore. Personal preference comes into play with your putter more than any club in your bag, but it's nice to know that there's an entire genre built for players with a specific type of putting stroke. If you're looking to ditch your arc, these putters are a great place to start.
