The PGA Tour kicks off after exactly 0 weeks off this September 10 with the 2020 Safeway Open, hosted by Silverado Country Club’s North Course in Napa, California. This year’s elongated season is scheduled for 50 events and 6 majors, all to make up for a truncated 2019-2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 14th Safeway Open opens the season for the first time ever and has attracted a mixed field, with some golfers who competed from the Tour Championship opting to skip the event, including defending champion Cameron Champ.
Despite the lack of break, there are still marquee names competing for the $6.6 million prize purse. Phil Mickelson is continuing to play on the PGA Tour, despite now being eligible for the PGA Tour Champions. In fact, Mickelson chose to play in the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National after being cut from the Northern Trust, winning the Senior Tour event by 1 stroke. Despite his advanced year, Mickelson is seen as a dark horse to win in Napa this week and his consistent play and fitness routine should see him compete. Fellow veteran Jim Furyk is also slated to compete, though more attention will be on Jordan Spieth. Spieth is looking for his first win since the 2017 British Open, and a field missing some of the top-ranked golfers will certainly work to his advantage. Graham DeLaet will also tee off as he continues his path back from a near-career ending back injury that caused him to miss the 2018-2019 season.
