The Wyndham Championship is the last PGA event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin. The tournament returns to the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina August 16-19. The field will feature established pros like defending champion Henrik Stenson, former champion Sergio Garcia as well as 2018 Players Championship winner Webb Simpson. The tournament also represents the last chance for golfers trying to make the FedEx Cup playoffs so the potential for an upset is high.
The Wyndham Championship was founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open and is the sixth-oldest event on the PGA Tour. The current home course, Sedgefield Country Club, has historically shared hosting duties with Starmount Forest Country Club from the tournament’s inception until 1960. Since 1961, Sedgefield Country Club has hosted every Wyndham Championship with the exception of a decade of tournaments hosted by Forest Oaks Country Club from 1997-2007. The Sedgefield course was designed by legendary Pinehurst architect Donald Ross, and remains a true test of golf.
The long history of the Wyndham Championship assures that some of golf’s greatest players, such as Ben Hogan, are counted among the past champions. Byron Nelson is a 2-time champion, as well as Billy Casper, while Davis Love III is a 3-time winner. However, all past champions pale to come close to Sam Snead’s record 8 wins spanning from his first in 1938 to his last in 1965. Defending champion Henrik Stenson achieved the lowest score of 258 (-22) at Sedgefield during last year’s win. Pundits are looking to see if Stenson can be the first champion to repeat since Snead won in 1955 and 1956.
