Have you ever wondered where your power comes from? Some of it comes from the clubs by virtue of changing lofts, that is certainly a fact. But when it comes to you creating power where do you get the power from? Basically there are four answers.
First of all we get power from our wrist cock, that is assuming we cock our wrists, a lot of people do not. They roll their wrists thinking they cock their wrists. The wrist cock is an up and down motion, it is not a rolling motion, but we are going to cover that at some other point in time. Point number one, wrists cock gives you power, it creates angles in the wrists and in the elbow, the back one.
The second source of power is in the swinging of your arms. As your arms swing from your body, if I was a softball pitcher I could get power out of that move. I am also using my wrists when I make that move. So between your wrists and your arms you now have two sources of power.
The third one comes from the rotation of your body, and that rotation also helps to move your weight. As you make your backswing you make a nice full coil to the right with your upper body, you resist with your lower and then your reverse that. you make a nice lower body rotation to the forward side and then your upper body follows that.
The fourth source of power comes from your ability to synchronize and time those three movements. Golf swings would look really funny if we only used one of those three things at a time. Hopefully you knew that was my wrists. There is arms without allowing the wrists to partake with the arms. Now here is wrists and arms. I get a lot of speed there but as you can hear I hit behind the ball and that is because I had no weight movement and or slash pivot or turn. It is really hard to hit a ball with just your pivot. It is a big move, it is a strong move, but it is also a slow move. So out of the three the one that gets you the least amount of power is the pivot. But when you combine the three, the wrist cock, the arm swing and the turning of your body and then you have rhythm and balance with that, that is where you get your maximum power.
The next time you take a lesson and somebody is working on your wrists that does not mean that is the only thing that moves, it just means that is the one that they don't think is moving well. In all your swings except for putting we use our wrists, our arms and our pivot and then we balance it and blend it so that we have rhythm with it and those are your four power sources.
