This is a very scenic course with a number of dramatic elevation changes. It’s also only 25 miles from New York City. Unfortunately, the positives of this course pretty much end there.

Hitting long shots is key on this course, just so that you can off the fairway as quickly as possible. Generally, the fairways aren’t maintained very well, although the course recently got a new sprinkler system.

Rockland State Park Golf Course has long holes (mostly Par 4’s and Par 5’s,) with a total course length of 6,864. The course isn’t very difficult though, especially if you can drive straight and hit long shots. The most common hazard you’ll encounter is thick treelines on both sides of the fairway. There are also a few small bunkers throughout the course.

The fairways are generally on the narrow side, but you’ll find that Holes #3 and #4 are a bit roomier. The longest hole on the course is #7 at 553 yards from the blue tee. Since this is a long and hilly course, renting a cart is highly recommended. Again, it’s not an overly difficult course, but the elevations can be a challenge if you walk the course.

The course is $30 without cart rental in mid-week, which is a fairly average rate, if not slightly on the expensive side (especially considering the overall condition of the course.)

This course would be ideal for intermediate golfers. It’s too long for complete beginners, and experienced golfers would get frustrated by the state of the course. The holes are mostly straight, which makes for good aim and distance practice. Greens are definitely on the slow side, and you’ll need all of the clubs in your bag to play this course.

Pace of play is reasonable, although the course can get really busy at peak times. I’d recommend golfing on a weekday morning for the shortest wait.

The clubhouse is old and the staff aren’t very friendly. All in all, I’d say this course is good to play once in awhile for a basic round. The views are pretty great too. The holes aren’t too challenging if you have good aim. If you don’t you’ll probably get frustrated from hitting out of trees all the time.

Stay away from this state course....fairways are dirt and rocks....bunkers are hard and the place is a dump.

Starter should be replaced. Prices are way above area courses. Green's are patchy and not well maintained. I would not recommend this course to my enemies.

Conditions are not what they used to be. Maintenance is very spotty. This can be a bear if your game is not on. A real challenge for players of all abilities. Also, it's a real cardiac test to walk it.
