This course has potential, but management has run it into the ground. Tee boxes are beat up and uneven. Greens don't provide consistency.... I used to be a member here, but there are better options in the area.

UPDATE: Played BB twice since last review and found better conditions at tee box and greens. Happy to say it is looking great and more like we remember. Still no active rangers though to keep pace. Otherwise very pleased and at the midweek rates it is good value.

Since I live nearby, I have played Beaver Brook dozens of times. I golfed here in the winter, spring and summer. Because of the steep greens fees for a course of this quality, I typically only play twilight golf here. Basically, the quality continues to deteriorate. I am not quite sure how they justify the greens fees they charge in the morning, both on weekdays and on weekends. The course has the potential to be quite nice, but the tee boxes and greens need some severe maintenance. Greens do not roll anything close to true and the tee boxes are so uneven your feet are typically above or below the ball. Not to mention the large pool of standing water between 6 and 7 that provides an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. The lack of a driving range is a huge negative in my opinion. Some of the views are quite nice, but some of the others (i.e. having to compete with noise from route 78 on holes 6 and 7). The recent lowering of rates makes this course more attractive to those who are local and just want to get out and play. But, I caution everyone to think long and hard before they pay prime time greens fees for a course, that in my opinion, is sub par. There are nicer courses in the area (Heron Glen and High Bridge Hills) that provide an overall better value and round of golf. But, if you are looking to just get out and hit, the twilight rates ($29 for Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren County residents) are worth it.

I just played Beaver Brook and really enjoyed myself at the course. I thought the fairways were narrow, but the course played fair for the average golfer. If you are errant off the tee on most holes i felt you had a decent second shot, although not from the fairway. The course also featured many elevation changes, either off the tee, or to an elevated green. Furthermore, the greens were challenging as well. I just played this course yesterday and I have to say I wasn't to impressed. The greens were in horrible shape lots of ball marks and divots on them along with bare spots where there was no grass. I'm glad I got an internet discount of $30 which included the cart or I really would have been upset. 11th hole green was unusable it was that bad. I should have just chipped on and picked up my ball. If it was maintained a little better it would be a nice place to play. I won't be going back.

I think the "Beave" is nothing but your typical suburban municipal course. It is definitely not worth the $85 greens fees (even with cart). The course has limited amenities, with no driving range and a very small putting green/chipping area. The tee boxes are an issue, many are not flat and overused. As for good things, some of the holes have nice views, there is a variety of doglegs left and right, the greens are challenging, well bunkered and multi-leveled which make for interesting pin placements, and the speed of the round is very manageable (probably because no-one is playing it with the exorbitant greens fees). I drove an hour from NYC to play here, and will not do it again. I do not recommend this course.

Unique design I’ve only seen at “The Beave”; Par 5s for the opening holes (1&2) and finishing holes (17&18). #1 plays to an elevated tee with a narrow, tree lined fairway. Standing there you wished this place had a range so you could swing with a little confidence. I don’t remember the tee boxes being in such bad shape so the previous comments have me stumped. Overall the course is well maintained but not to the point of being “manicured” and IMHO isn’t necessary to have an enjoyable round. Minimum standards are that the greens are consistent, the fairways cut and weed free (mostly) and the tee boxes grassed and level. BB is well above the minimum in these areas though the teeing areas could stand greater rotation during the year (lots of divots that don’t grow back/aren’t re-seeded well during the later part of the year). A solid 7-8 on the golf-o-meter.

Pretty well maintained fairways and greens. As some others have said, tee boxes could use a little cleaning up. Courteous and helpful staff. Particularly the starter for us, as he put our twosome on a starting hole to well execute a 3.5 hour 6AM round!

The course is relatively tight, not indicative of the relatively easy slope rating. There are not a lot of good driving holes on this course. So if you prefer a grip it and rip it style, this is not the place for you. There are quite a few holes where tee shots with irons or hybrids are a necessity because of severe doglegs and small landing areas.

I would consider the greens a bit on the severe side. Don't expect a lot of 1 putts here. Be happy if you can escape without a 3 putt during your round, but expect a few.

Overall a decent course, but I would not recommend for regular play at $79. Maybe once or twice a year max.

Very challenging course with medium speed greens that are in good condition and very contoured. If you don't drive the ball accurately you probably won't enjoy your round very much. But I would recommend it to low handicappers up for the challenge. Wimps can always elect to play the short tees for a happier time there.

As far as public courses in the area, its up near the top. It is a little pricey in the morning but if you go after 2, its 39, and after 4 its only 29 (weekday) so that's not too bad. The conditions are not the best, tee boxes really do need work. Nice start though with two tough par 5's, then a tough par four, followed up by a par 3, with a brutal green. There really are some tough greens on the course. Overall worth the money and will challenge your game..

Reviewed July 09, 2008

the only negative thing i can say is that it doesn't have a driving range, and i wish the pool could be used by golfers.
