Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club at Tryon Resort (formerly Cleghorn Plantation) has a rich history. In 1764, the Crown Governor of the Colony of NC granted land to John McDowell who grew wheat, cotton and corn on his plantation. Eleven years later, the plantation was purchased by William Cleghorn. Over 50 years later Cleghorn built the Manor House which has survived to this day!

Over the years, the plantation was passed down through the Cleghorn family. In 1972 it was transformed into Cleghorn Plantation Golf and Country Club by famous golf course designer George Cobb. Cobb has well over 100 golf course designs to his credit, most notably the Par 3 Course at Augusta National and Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC, home to the 2017 PGA Championship!

Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club at Tryon Resort has been acclaimed by the PGA as one of the best courses in North Carolina. Golf Digest has also listed Cleghorn in their “Best Places to Play” and they have been voted “The #1 Golf Course in Rutherford County” multiple times by readers of the Rutherford Daily Courier.

Whether it’s an elevated tee box, a well-bunkered green or rolling fairways, each hole has its own distinct character; Cleghorn aims to please even the most discerning golfer. The course plays 6,762 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 73.3 and a slope of 136. With all of the ups and downs associated with mountain golf, most golfers will get all they can handle from the Gold Tees (6,131/70.6/128). Ladies typically play from the Bronze Tees (4,617/68/120). In all, a total of four sets of tees offer distances suitable for every golfer. Pick the right set of tees and Cleghorn could quickly become your favorite golf course in the area.

Memorable Golf Holes
Most Memorable Hole: Number 15, Par 4, 331 yards (Gold Tees). Although it’s a short par 4, it was George Cobb’s favorite and that’s good enough for us! It’s a dogleg right with water all down the right side so play a hybrid or 3-wood down the left side of the fairway. Push it right off the tee and it’s most likely wet. The creek crosses the fairway in front of the green so be sure to take enough club to get it there. Avoid the bunker on the right side and a good score can be had.

Favorite Par 3: Number 7, 182 yards (Gold Tees). This long par 3 requires you to carry the ball onto the green off the tee to this highly elevated green. Anything that lands even a couple feet short of the green is going to roll all the way to the bottom of the fairway and require an interesting uphill chip shot that could start the process all over again. Par is a good score here.

Favorite Par 4: Number 1, 314 yards (Gold Tees). Better get it while the getting’s good! This straight par 4 is ranked the easiest hole on the course. Although the fairway narrows as you near the green and the right side of the green is guarded by three bunkers, you should be able to get your round off to a great start. Hit anything long and left and you’ll make things tougher than they need to be.

Favorite Par 5: Number 18, 541 yards (Gold Tees). Although the hole plays straight, you start with a blind tee shot with not much trouble around. With a large lake in front of the green, the second shot is not a tough decision, layup! Just be sure to hit it far enough to get to the bottom of the hole, or you’ll be looking at a long iron into an uphill green from a downhill lie. The green has some moderate undulations and will make you earn that par.

Before your round, spend some time on the grass driving range. It’s a great opportunity to work on your accuracy, something you’ll be grateful for once you get out on the course. There’s also a large practice putting green to give you an idea of what’s to come and let you warm up your short game.

All lodging is located at the Tryon Equestrian Center and there are several options available. Tryon is about 8 minutes away from the golf course.

Last Word

Cleghorn is truly one of the best places to play golf in Western North Carolina. George Cobb has created a course that is much more than 18 holes of golf; with the views it offers it is an experience you will not soon forget. You’ll find the front nine to be tight and hilly, while the back nine has a lot more water and opens up a bit. The Champion Bermuda greens have been reworked and are in pristine condition, firm and fast. The bunkers have undergone their own restoration process with new edging and sand in all 58 bunkers throughout the layout. After your round stop by the pro shop and pick up some logoed merchandise to remember your golfing experience by. They stock new golf polos, shoes, balls and gloves and sell them at very moderate prices. If you’re looking for a course in Western NC that will put all of your golf skills to the test, play a round at Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club. Cleghorn offers stay and play packages that will soon be listed on their website.

I played this course yesterday. First their website advertises $28.00 twilight rates start @ 1pm and free replays all the time
after you arrive you will find something totally different $40.00 @ 1:30 pm and $15.00 replays. As for condition fairways were great but greens condition was lacking some greens have been sanded some not some greens were half dead and ground under repair one green the only thing left was a 20 ft. circle that they had as green target golf I guess. to sum it up I would think twice about booking a round here for a while.

Played course in mid Feburary and it was in good shape considering being the middle of winter. I rated difficulty as a 4 because we played from the white tees, from the back tees i'd easily say a 5 difficulty. Accuracy is of the upmost importance here, you've got to keep the tee shot in the fairway. Most of the greens are heavily guarded by sand so beware on approaches. Overall the course is very nice and challenging, can not wait to go play it again.

I played this course on 1/19/2010..and given the fact its mid winter I was very impressed with the course. THe clubhouse was new and impressive. The price for the over 55 crowd was a steal!! From the whites....the front is pretty short. It presents its challenges though with carries over water and gullies. THe back is longer with water and doglegs. Its a far course if you keep your ball in the fairway. Some of the fairways are a little tight esp on the back. I imagine in the summer its spectacular. THe only bad expereince was with some senior ladies who stopped for lunch after 9 and then would not let us (a twosome) play through. Other than that...it was a VERY good experience. I am going back!

GREAT VALUE! Very well maintained. This is the first all-bermuda course I've played; the rough is ROUGH! The wind is a real factor. We will play again--often.

I was delighted with the course when i played on 5/25/2009 the greens were a little rough, the fairways was great and the view is out of this world. I would play this track if i got another chance too, I live 2 hours away and this is the only reasons why its not in my rotation of courses I play often.

Are u kidding me. Rated better than Brights Creek. These reviews are done by friends of the owners. Totally bogus. This is an OK course only! In the middle of nowhere. All the 2fer golfers play here. Golf link should be ashamed at its rating of this course. 46th in the Country?? Above Westhester???? Oh Please. Enjoy the free lunch!!

I have played this course the past couple of years and the conditions just keep getting better. This is a world class golf course. A great challenge but very fair. The new owner has done an awesome job and the grounds crew deserves a round of applause. Just beware of the great big guy behind the counter, he is a load of laughs. I would give it 5 stars all around but they do not have a restaurant. A must play if you are in the area. A steal at $50 a round. I will be back as many times as I can.

Played a practice round last week and loved it, playing again saturday and hope I like it as well afterwards, LOL
Beautiful course, just starting to green up and very smooth, fast and tricky greens
It does remind me of Augusta in some ways also as some one else stated.

New owner recently has done major upgrades and this is as nice a course as you'll find in the Carolinas. Wonderful landscaping. Fairly difficult in places.

one of the most beautiful courses in the carolinas, and a good challenge for beginners anyway. My son and i play it as often as possible LOVE IT

Reviewed September 28, 2007

I would give this a five but 9 is a stupid hole. The course is great and a tremendous value. Terrific variety of holes with fast greens and a thick bermuda rough. IF playing as a par five hole 9 is a 5 iron (200yds) off the tee I hit my 20 degree and almost hit it into the last as it rolled down a severe slope. I would rate it similar to the JAckson course at rock barn but at half the price.

Awesome! Remote location would be the only minus, then again $25.00 green fees after 2:00 make the drive that much more pleasant. A must play course, Very fast greens and ball gobbling ruff keep you on your toes.

Cleghorn (played it 8/2/07) is the best course I have ever played in the Carolina's. Supposedly, it was in terrible shape for a few years. I never saw those conditions. All I can say is that it is so AUGUSTA like; the fairways, the greens, the scenery. IT IS BEAUTIFUL. Great water holes that look great because of surrounding rock beds and also flower beds. It is a great buy for $45.00.
