Great course very difficult beautiful scenery

Reviewed December 02, 2011

Nags Head is an 18 hole course that meanders through the Nags Head Village development right on the Roanoke Sound. The course is very well maintained – greens and tee boxes were in great condition. The only problem on the day we played is that three of the greens were heavily damaged by flooding from Hurricane Irene and temporary greens were in effect for those three holes.

The course has four sets of tees, ranging from 4,400 yards to 6,100 yards. Don’t let the distance fool you. If you are a 20 handicap like me, do not play from the back tees. You will not be able to carry the many holes with water in play. It was very windy on the day we played which made the holes into the wind much, much harder than they look on the scorecard.

Cost was $45 with cart for a winter round - not bad - a good value. I believe it is much more expensive in the summertime.

Nice restaurant that seems to draw a regular lunch crowd. Friendly pro shop staff.

In summary, a recommended course if you are in the area. The greens that were damaged appear to be well on their way to recovery.

Wow!! Great place, absolutely fantastic place to play. Probably should have gone earlier in the week, rather than after 4 days at the beach and a long drive...(scores reflect that) but certainly my all time favorite place to play. Will make this my golf stop every year that I come to outer banks. Greens have improved significantly (per staff) and fairways are beautiful. I didn't mind the cost (for the scenery its well worth it). Food was awesome. (chicken salad sandwich was great, beer was cold). People were polite and laid back.

Wow!!! We come to OBX annually, but I played here 8-5-08 for the first time, and was really impressed with the course (I usually play The Pointe, Duck Woods, and the Carolina Club). Layout is very tough, especially for a first-timer: off the fairway is death. Second time around will save 5-7 strokes, just knowing where to not hit the ball (I hit two drives that seemed perfect from the tee...until I got to where the ball should've been!). Conditions were superb: tee boxes lush, fairways firm with no bare spots, greens largish, modestly contoured, and moderately paced. Greens were on the soft side, so held balls well, but also held footprints. On the down side: I played after noon, with the "twilight" rate of $95, and the pace was excruciatingly slow, which seriously diminished the fun factor. The staff is uniformly excellent, and the scenery is really nice, with sound views on about half of the holes. A word to the wise: bring plenty of balls, as there isn't much room for error on most holes. Another word to the wise: it's a short course - leave the driver in the bag, or better yet, in the trunk, and hit the ball where you can see it. I think this is THE best course on the OBX and highly recommend it.

It was my first time playing the course and it was an experience I will not soon forget. The staff is helpful and bright from start to finish. The course was beautiful and challenging with lush rolling fairways and tough undulating greens. There is sometype of water on almost all of the holes which makes for a lot of fun(and a couple of extra strokes). Even though the course is rather difficult it is a ton of fun no matter how well you play, with holes 4 or 5 holes right along the Currituck Sound, the views and breezes you get are absolutely stunning. Don't forget to stop by the players grill for some great food after a long round.

Played it for the first time this year on vacation. Absolutely beautiful course and very well maintained. Pace was a bit slow, but I did not mind as the scenery kept my eyes busy. Course was challenging and made you really think about the shots you were taking. I will definitely play this course again. We went off the island to Goose Creek in Grandy NC the last time we visited the OBX - we learned from our mistake and paid the few extra dollars to stay on the island.

I golf here every year while vacationing in the outer banks, but no more! They load the course up, and then have the rangers chase you around. Its a shame, as the course is beautiful. Not worth the on-course hassle or 5 hour round!
