Springfield gets a lot of play because there aren't too many courses nearby, however it's simply just an average to below average course for the price. It's maintained to o.k standards, but lacks a 2nd cut when approaching most greens. To make it worse the greens are lightning quick which would typically be a good thing but not here. When your 5 feet from the green and flag you virtually have a chip shot but since you are chipping from the rough you can't put any spin on the ball and thus your best chip shot will run well by the hole. It would be better to over hit every hole and chip onto the green where you have more green to play with. Definately can't flag hunt because if your two feet short or two feet long and end up just off the green its like adding a stroke due to your upcoming uncontrolable chip. The course is extremely hilly which makes for some unique nice looking holes, not a course to walk for sure. Also call ahead to get the correct rate as they might try to change the price when you get there. Clarify that you are not a resident of the county. Fortunately I had the persons name I talked to, but otherwise I would have been charged $16 more than originally quoted. It's always packed in the summer and hard to get a tee time which is why I waited till November to play. The staff isn't very friendly, I guess because they know they have the business anyway. They have logo balls, a nice plus for the collector like myself. However, when they charge and act like they are running Pebble Beach, when they definately are not, I will be playing elsewhere. Overall rating B-.
I have played this course several times in the past few years and I will say the club is trying to improve. The conditions are getting better and it offers a few very tough holes. If you're looking for a scenic course go somewhere else but if you want to play a decent round of golf near Philadelphia, this place will do the trick. See my full review at www.wamgolf.com
I'm not a terribly good golfer. I've played the course three times and I've been less than impressed. The area is not really that scenic. There were some deer wandering around, which was a nice distraction, but otherwise you get a view of the giant radio tower, a bunch of houses in a relatively new development bordering the course, the Springfield mall (ooh ahh), and on the ninth a wonderful view of Route 320. It lends to just how boring this area can be. The pro shop is much better outfitted than Paxon Hollow, but the course isn't nearly as fun as Paxon Hollow. If they could reverse situations I'd be thrilled to go play at Paxon Hollow and patronize their pro shop all the same. Really I'd rather play Paxon Hollow any day over Springfield regardless of the pro shop. They're friendlier, better maintained, and have gas carts, which I prefer when I'm not in the mood to walk. Springfield has one advantage, and that is it's cheaper at twilight to walk. There's only a $3 difference though. Just go play Paxon Hollow if you can't afford somewhere like the Golf Course at Glen Mills (which I cannot).
