Course Reviews

Playing Pasatiempo is a memorable experience. Every shot requires a clear-headed strategy to navigate to the next shot ... and so on. The layout is varied and extremely challenging without being "tricked up" or unfair. As with other classic layouts it is a walking course best enjoyed and attacked from ground level. Sure it's a bit hilly, but easily walkable for most golfers (I'm in my 60's and had no problems). The clubhouse is disappointing - nondescript for such an historic venue and the driving range is poorly situated but those are minor complaints easily offset by the outstanding staff, great conditions and overall quality of the golfing experience.

Pasatiempo, when it is in good shape, is awesome. This is where Alistair McKenzie retired to. It has a coupel funky holes and ends in a PAR 3 but I always enjoy playing here. It's not the best out there but it's worth playing.

This is a nice course with a mix of some great holes and some tricked up holes requiring blind shots. When I played (7/18/09) the course was not in very good condition especially given the green fees. Also this is a semi-private course and one 'member' that I had an interaction with was an unpleasant snob who jumped in front of my group on the first tee. For the price there are far better courses in the bay area to play. They are charging a significant and unjuustified premium b/c it is an Alister MacKenzie design and in my opion this course is over-hyped.

We played Pasatiempo yesterday afternoon and were a little disappointed. The course itself was in good condition; but not in great condition.
The layout of the front 9 (simplistic back-and-forth fairways) reminds you of a typical muni layout. The layout on the back 9 is very nice and met our expectations of what all 18 holes should have more closely resembled.
A few other real disappointments: the practice range is a very sad joke (mats only -except during tournaments, cheesy self-serve token machine, short range w/o bunkering or realistic target greens, no access: you have to drive in an automobile -no carts allowed- to get to this remote practice range, etc., etc), there is VERY limited parking at this public golf course, other golfers are very close to you and are talking/yelling in the parallel fairways (a ball from #9 slammed the front of our cart while it was parked on the path of hole #1), a par 3 finishing hole -are you serious?
About us: We are members at a CC that is more highly manicured than Pasatiempo and is used for PGA Tour Qualifying. Our course is tougher (143 slope/75.9), tighter, and has equally difficult greens. We played Pasatiempo with the notion of joining due to an employment relocation opportunity. With current Pasatiempo "shares" selling for $125,000, we will definitely spend our money elsewhere.
Funny thing, our head pro has also played Pasatiempo and didn't think much of it. If you are looking to play a truly GREAT public golf course: spend your $220 at Pacific's worth every penny.

Being from Georgia and growing up with The Masters spending many days at Augusta National will give you an appreciation for MacKenzie. The bunkers intentionally have a different look when comparing the courses, but the use of bunkering, the greens, use of slopes and undualtion are all very similar. It is funny how he came from a flat area in Scotland but used elevation changes in his best work in the US. If you are a golf history buff, this is a great experience for $200. Getting on Cyprus or Augusta is not a possiblity for many, but with the recent renovation of Pasatiempo you can play very similar holes. From the back tees with a little wind, this is still a great test of golf.

one of the best courses i've ever played, not including the mystique that is associated with it. we walked the course which is well worth it. the round unfortunately was marred by being incredibly slow! we waited on 18 for almost 15 minutes while the foursome in front of us hit in the hazard, took drops, and putted everything out! look forward to getting back there again.

What a course -- probably the only Alister MacKenzie course most golfers will ever get to play (Cypress Point and Augusta are so tough to get on, and Royal Melbourne is too far away). Just restored to MacKenzie era standards by Tom Doak, the course is just fantastic...challenging, fun, views of Monterey Bay from many holes, well conditioned. Old school, laid back atmosphere, and when you compare the green fees to other top public courses in the area (like Pebble or Spyglass), it's a bargain. Beautiful area of the country, weather is usually great there...easily one of the finest courses I've ever played.

Wife and I played on 10/19/ paired with a single who was very friendly and knew the course quite well...having just played Cypress Pt. two days before, we were very interested in the provenance of the course (McKenzie, Hollins, etc.)...could not have been more impressed...this course is beautiful, hard, and very rewarding when you hit the required shot...I failed to hit that required shot on #11 which certainly must rank as one of the most diabolical par 4s in North America...Santa Cruz is not the easiest place to get to which must contribute to keeping Pasatiempo uncrowded and in pristine condition...get there and play it! Best, Richard Eide Jr.

The Agusta National of the West coast

I can see the design is more similar to the Masters @ Agusta very nice & difficult. Is there away that you can lower the green fee?

A Great Experience

Believe the hype. This is a fantastic course. The club and staff are first rate as well.
