The 18-hole "Old Marsh" course at the Old Marsh Country Club facility in Wells, Maine features 6,523 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. Designed by Brian M. Silva, ASGCA, the Old Marsh golf course opened in 2008.
While on vacation at York Beach, I played The Ledges, The Outlook, Cape Neddick and Old Marsh. I play to a 4 and I walk. Old Marsh is a newer course and very well designed. The course requires a straight ball and some rather good length to cover some forced carries, but nothing scary. All the holes are fair and I don’t recall any blind shots. Old Marsh is a good mix of short and long holes. It is an easy walk and a pleasurable place to play. They have walking carts you can use for no charge. One word of caution – if you play first thing in the morning, four of the first five holes will be dead into the sun. For me, Old Marsh rates #1 of the four.
Saturday April 15, 2012I just played this course and I already want another try. I didn't score that great as I somehow found trouble. The course does not appear to be that penal, but the sand comes into play around every green. The course is only 4 years old, and it is in superb shape. From Boston it is actually easier to travel to Wells, Maine than it is to the Cape. This course has a nice variety of holes with a drivable par 4. From the blacks # 9 can be tough to reach in two! Brian Silva is getting better with age.
