Course Reviews

I've played Bear Trace several times, and it is always very well maintained with slick/fast greens. There are sand traps on most every hole and deep woods lining at least one side on most holes that will penalize errant shots. However, the only water hazard is #14.

I agree with some of the other comments that the course is pricey. I can't afford to play here often, but it's a nice treat every now-and-then.

Great course! A little steep on the cost but the drive out from the Chattanooga area is all worth it!

Probably the best public course in the Greater Chattanooga area. Always full of nature and great scenery. I have seen deer, raccoons, snakes, turtles, rabbits, and other animals during my rounds there. Very well maintained. Only downside is the cost, $54 on the weekend is a little more than I want to spend. But if you wait till later in the day the twilight rate drops the price to $37. Beautiful course, challenging, and memorable.

Definitely the best in the area that you can play. Played there in Aug 07 and March 08. Will play again next time I am in the area.

Very good course. Maintained well and scenery is beautiful. Challanging, but not so difficult that a novice couldn't play. Definatly worth coming back to.

The locale for this course is superb, as it runs along the shores of a large TVA lake which is visible from many of the holes. The lake actually comes into play on only one hole. Since it is located in a state park, there are no homes along the course and all the fairways are carved from dense woodlands. The scenery is one of the best things about this otherwise fairly average course. Like a lot of Nicklaus courses, this layout favors those who can shape their shots as many of the greens are angled with respect to the fairway and almost all are heavily protected with deep greenside bunkers. On the day we played, the condition of the course was acceptable, but not great. We were somewhat disappointed with what we perceived as a rather typical collection of holes, displaying little of the imagination we found at another Bear Trace course at Cumberland Mountain. In reading some of the other comments, I suppose we are in the minority on that point. We have been on a golfing vacation in Tennessee and of the five courses we've played so far, this is the least memorable layout. It is a beautiful location and worthwhile if you're already in the area, but I doubt that we'd go out of our way to play here again.

This is a great course, very well maintained and in great condition.

Wow, definitely one of if not THE best public golf courses in Tennessee. The course plays moderately difficult with lots of greenside and fairway sand bunkers throughout the course. The greens and fairways are always in excellent condition even in the midst of the dryest of summers. The staff has been helpful and friendly. The course offers discounts to state employees and military personnel that are incredible. The driving range and practice greens are nice. The clubhouse is also nice, offering a wide variety of golf apparel, equipment, food, etc.

Bear Trace

Bear Trace at Harrison Bay is pretty basic golf. The clubhouse is like a log cabin with a tin roof. There's a nice grill with good burgers and sandwiches. The course has wide fairways and large greens. Most of the holes are memorable rather than being cookie-cutter. Many of the holes are along Harrison Bay and have great views of the water. It's a rolling, parkland type course with some elevation changes, but not huge ones. The conditioning of the course is very good for a true public course inside a state park. At $39 for the 18 hole green fee (including cart), it's a really good value.
