The 18-hole "Black Bear" course at the Black Bear Golf Club facility in Vanderbilt, Michigan features 6,504 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. Designed by Mark Sauger, the Black Bear golf course opened in 1996.
Started off with an attitude in the pro shop at check in. - That should have been an indicator of what was to come. Waited 10 minutes to hit while standing in the first fairway. Waited to hit on every shot for the entirety of the first nine holes. The bunkers had not been raked all season, they looked like a herd of wild bulls had been running through them. 3 hours 10 minutes to play the front. I just through my clubs in the car at the turn and was prepared to leave. My brother went in to see if they would give some form of credit for the pro shop, golf, or food to compensate for the miserable golf experience. He was told that 6 hour rounds are common here? He indicated that was unacceptable and ridiculous. He was summarily cussed out and asked to leave and never come back. DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE UNLESS YOU FEEL 6 hour rounds are acceptable. The entire experience at this course was below average. They do not know how to run a golf course!!!!!
The course is rough in some areas. Not nearly as nice as other up north courses. We purchased the Up North card which, when paid for, allows the golfer to play for the cost of the cart fee. Last year the cart fee was $15. This year they hiked the cart fee to $25! This was especially interesting since you can get 18 holes of golf with a cart at this course for that amount on line. This course was not worth paying this cart fee plus the cost of the up north card. Talk about taking advantage of people!
Do not play this course! Mgt. would not honor a rain check after playing 4 holes! We had 18 golfers! We will never book another outing @ this course!
