Callaway's new mantle promises more ball speed. Did it deliver?
Callaway Chrome Soft is for players who want soft feel with a higher ball flight and fast ball speeds, all while retaining control around the greens. The 2026 Chrome Soft is the latest test of whether "soft" and "fast" can actually coexist.

How We Tested the 2026 Callaway Chrome Soft
We put the 2026 Callaway Chrome Soft through our published golf ball testing protocols using the SkyTrak ST Max launch monitor. That means human swings under strict bands for swing speed, impact quality, and delivery dynamics.
To see performance from tee to green, we test driver, 7-iron, and 50-yard wedge shots with each ball.
We tested 43 golf balls in total for 2026 then translated the raw data into 1-10 scores in the categories that matter most to your game. That lets you easily see how each ball stacks up to the field from tee to green.

Callaway Chrome Soft Specs, Pricing & Performance
Chrome Soft has always been Callaway's answer for players who want tour-level short-game spin with a softer feel, and the 2026 version uses a new "Tour Fast Mantle" – a stiffer intermediate layer Callaway says adds ball speed without raising compression – to squeeze more ball speed out of the new Chrome Soft.
In our testing, Chrome Soft proved to be a soft-feeling ball with measurable bite around the greens, but our test didn’t identify it as the distance ball Callaway's marketing suggests.
When it comes to the scoring clubs, Chrome Soft separated itself with an impressive wedge control score and serviceable stopping power. Our 7-iron test suggested it’s not going to stick to greens as strong as high-spin “X” balls, but it does reward a good swing with a good result.

Chrome Soft isn't a distance ball, according to our test. At mid-90s swing speeds, it rolled out to 239.8 total off the driver which finished in the bottom-third in total distance of the 43 balls we tested.
Distance in our 7-iron test was similar, with its 166.5 yards carry and 177.1 total both finishing a step behind the longest balls we tested. None of that is a knock on playability. Chrome Soft launches at a reasonable mid trajectory and doesn't sacrifice control to get there. It's just not producing the same distance numbers as Callaway's own ERC Soft or the Chrome Tour X.

Stopping Power: 7.0/10
Stopping Power was not Chrome Soft’s strong suit. With a 41.0-degree descent angle it rolled out 11.1 yards, slightly more roll-out than our 43-ball field average of 10.7 yards. Low 7-iron spin is the biggest reason. The a 24.1-yard apex was satisfactory, but there wasn’t enough spin behind it to check up hard.
If stopping approach shots quickly is your top priority, that’s not the strength of Chrome Soft according to our testing.

From 50 yards, Chrome Soft was one of the better performers in our entire test. A high 34.1-degree launch paired with above average spin produced just 1.9 yards of roll. That’s an impressive result that makes Chrome Soft a great option for players who prioritize short game control and want to get it from a softer-feeling ball.
Callaway’s combination of its Tour Fast Mantle and Chrome Soft’s soft urethane cover pays off around the green.

Chrome Soft didn’t do anything extra to keep stray shots online. Driver sidespin checked in at 265 RPM with 8.0 yards of average offline dispersion, and the 7-iron wasn't much tighter at 109.9 RPM of sidespin and 7.7 yards offline. With a lower-spin profile from the 7-iron in general, that sidespin result was better than most, but overall, Chrome Soft was a get-out-what-you-put-in performer when it came to accuracy.
That's not surprising for a lower-compression, higher-launch ball built for feel rather than a penetrating flight. But if you’re looking for a ball that will resist sidespin when you miss big off the tee, this isn't it.

At $57 a dozen, Chrome Soft sits at the top of the market alongside Pro V1, TP5, and Chrome Tour X, but its middling Distance and Accuracy scores keep it from matching the all-around value of cheaper balls in the same soft, urethane-cover category. Vice Pro Air, for instance, posted a higher overall Performance score (7.7 to 7.5) at nearly half the price, and Maxfli Tour outscored it in three of four categories at $29 a dozen.
Who Is the 2026 Callaway Chrome Soft For?
Chrome Soft is built for a specific type of player: someone who wants the softest feel in Callaway's premium lineup and prioritizes greenside performance, and is willing to trade some top-end distance to get it.
If you already fight a slice or hook off the tee, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you want that soft feel from a urethane ball more than every last yard, Chrome Soft delivers.
