What is the TaylorMade Driving Relief Charity Event?

TaylorMade Driving Relief | Golf Channel

While all major professional tours have been on hold for the past month, and will remain on hold until June, golf fans will have a charity event to watch this week on Sunday, May 17, when the TaylorMade Driving Relief kicks off.

What is It?

The event is a skins game between the team of Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy verus Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff. Each hole will be worth a set amount of money each team can win for the charity of their choice. The teams will play best ball, with every golfer playing their own ball and the player with the best score winning the hole for their team. Holes 1-6 are worth $50,000 each, 7-16 are worth $100,000 each, with hole 17 worth $200,000. The final hole is worth a whopping $500,000. If any hole is tied, the prize money is carried over to the following holes. If there is a tie on the 18th hole, they will replay the 17th hole. In the event of time restraints, the player with the ball closest to the pin will break the tie and claim the money.

Charitable Giving

Johnson and McIlroy are playing for the American Nurses foundation while Fowler and Wolff are playing for the CDC Foundation. The total purse is $3 million which was donated by UnitedHealth Group. Another $1 million is provided by Farmers Insurance for a separate birdie and eagle contest. Anytime a player birdies he will win $25,000 for World Central Kitchen’s Off Their Plate initiative that supports healthcare workers and other frontline workers. An eagle earns $50,000 to the same fund.

Where is It?

The tournament is being held at the exclusive Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, FL. The course has long been  a favorite for professionals but has never hosted a professional event. This will be the first time the course has been on television and viewers can see for themselves if the classic Donald Ross design is all it is rumored to be.

How to Watch

The tournament will be broadcast by NBC 2-6pm EST, and will also be streaming for free through PGA Tour Live and Golf TV. The broadcast will be virtual, with Mike Tirico, Rich Lerner, and Paul Azinger set to provide commentary. Jerry Foltz, Gary Koch, and Steve Sands will be on-site to provide support and interviews from a safe distance. In addition, the players will be mic’d, so expect some level of banter and trash talk.
