Ping Rapture Driver Reviews

By Jim Hagerty

The Ping Rapture V2 is a comfortable game-improvement driver.
Specs

The Rapture V2 is the latest in Ping's Rapture family of titanium drivers. It boasts titanium and tungsten 460cc head. The Rapture V2 is equipped with two visible sole weights, near the sole and toe. This, Ping claims, reduces spin, optimizes center of gravity and promotes quicker launch. Rapture V2 drivers come in four lofts: 9.5, 10.5, 12 and 13.5 degrees. Fitted with a special Ping TFC 939 graphite shaft, the Rapture V2 is a game improvement club with a head weight of 200 grams. Left-handed clubs are available.

Perks

Like many of the Ping drivers in the past, the face is soft and and the club relatively easy to swing. The shaft-head relationship creates comfort at impact and ball jumps off the the face quickly. The sole weights produce accurate shots, and getting the ball up is fairly easy with controlled and moderately paced swings.

Sacrifices

While the Rapture V2 is comfortable with the ability to help most players keep the ball in the fairway, it has the tendency of producing high, lofty shots, resulting in loss of distance. While the 9.5-degree club with minimal torque does produce lower shots, the ball gets up a bit quicker than desired. An 8.5-degree offering would serve this line better.

Bottom Line

The Rapture V2 is an acceptable game-improvement club that promotes accuracy and acceptable distance. But it isn't a "player's" club. At $399 retail (2009), the V2 is perfect for slow swing speeds, offering comfort for those struggling with control. Advanced players will need to re-shaft to avoid stock distance sacrifices.

Clubfitting Is Important, but Set Makeup Can Be Critical
by Mike Chwasky
When most golfers think of customizing their clubs, they immediately think about fitting. And while determining the right loft, lie, length and grip size, among other things, is critical to getting optimal performance from a set of clubs, set makeup can be equally, if not more, important. Basically, the days of eight irons, two wedges, three woods and a putter are over, and opening your mind--and bag--to new ideas is a great way to improve your game and your scores.
