The Best Golf Putters

By Steve Silverman

Putters are perhaps the most personal club any golfer has in his bag. There are no right putters. You can spend $500 on a putter and not be happy with it, while another golfer can find a bargain at somebody's garage sale and fall in love with it. The most important factor you have to have with a putter is "feel." It is a difficult subject to define, but you have to believe that if you hit the ball and it feels right, it has a great chance to go into the hole.

Callaway Trax

The Callaway Trax putter gives many high-handicap and intermediate-level golfers security on the green. Three large arrows on the top of the putter leave you with the impression that the putt is on target if you hit an even stroke. The Callaway Trax putter has its weight evenly distributed, and that almost always results in you getting a solid "feel" for the ball when the face of the club makes contact. (Average price in 2009: $109.99)

TaylorMade Rossa

TaylorMade's Rossa putter has a unique anti-skid factor that makes it extremely popular with teaching pros and golfers. With most of the weight near the bottom of this mallet-style putter, you need to put an even takeaway on the ball to have the club come through smoothly. This is particularly helpful when you have a long putt and are afraid of knocking the ball by the hole. (Average price in 2009: $119.99)

Nike Oz Black T130

This is one of Nike's most popular putters, and its oversized mallet with a large hitting area gives you a chance to make a solid putt even if the stroke is less than perfect. Most of the weight is on the outside of the putter, so anything struck toward the middle should result in a workable putt. (Average price in 2009: $119.99)
