Delorme Maps Vs. Garmin

By Marc Jenkins

Since we have been in the 21st century and the information age, receiving knowledge and know-how seems essential now more than ever in every walk of life. Over the past 10 years the emergence of navigation and GPS systems has swept across the nation and many people rely on them in order to travel, drive home and even play golf. Two of the biggest and best manufacturers of GPS systems currently are DeLorme Maps and Garmin, but which is superior?

Delorme Maps

For more than 30 years DeLorme Maps has created and developed software for map data creation and GPS integration purposes as well as being responsible for many of the key technological progressions in the mapping industry. DeLorme Maps is the manufacturer of some of the most popular GPS and digital maps systems available today, including the Earthmate GPS and the extremely popular XMap series. The prices for its products can range from $99-$900 depending on the sophistication of the machine and the amount of software that it contains. Garmin

For 20 years now Garmin has also created and developed navigation and communication devices to make consumers' lives easier in any possible way. Garmin has made itself one of the top three manufacturers of GPS systems for any situation in just a short amount of time, which has to mean it is producing quality products. Some of its more popular devices include the new GVN-53 GPS and the Nuvi series, which has more than 20 models already. Garmin GPS devices generally cost between $199-$599 depending on which model you select and what software is included. For further product or company information log on to its website, which is listed below.

Which is Better

When it comes to simply mapping technology and GPS systems, DeLorme Maps hands down is the better of the two. The extreme detail with which DeLorme creates its GPS systems is extraordinary, which is why it has been the leader for 30 years and should only continue to remain in that position. The detail within the maps as far as the topographical features and other geographical information displayed, such as bodies of water and mountains, is leaps and bounds superior to Garmin's. However, Garmin does have the advantage over DeLorme when it comes to branching out and making other terrific products. Garmin also produces a host of other options to its consumers such as fish finders, golf range finders, two-way radios and much more. So one company could be better than the other depending on what device you are looking for and what its use will be.
