How to Hit a Lefty Punch

By Steve Silverman

Golfers need how to learn to play a variety of shots as their game matures and grows. One of these shots is the punch shot. Left-handed golfers need to play this shot when they are playing into a stiff wind or an overhanging branch from a tree is low and could interfere with his next shot.

Difficulty: Moderate
Step 1
Use a club that does not have a great deal of loft when preparing to play a punch. A seven-iron is probably the highest-lofted club you should use and a four- or five-iron would work even better.
Step 2
Play the ball back in your stance. Instead of playing it midway between your right and left feet, it should about two ball lengths closer to your left foot.
Step 3
Align yourself square to the target. If you are in the fairway or the short rough, the tendency may be to open your right shoulder a bit. When you are trying to punch, you need to be square to the target.
Step 4
Place your hands ahead of the ball so the club has less loft. This is called the forward press position.
Step 5
Take a three-fourths swing as you hit the ball. Bring the club back to your left about three-fourths of the way you normally do, rotate your hips forward and come through to the point you would reach after three-fourths of your follow through. This will keep the ball low and prevent the wind from altering it or having a tree branch get in its way.

Tips & Warnings

The punch shot is a great weapon to add to your arsenal when playing in windy conditions.
