How to Hit Pure Chip Shots

By Contributing Writer

You must practice working on the basic mechanics of chipping to hit pure chip shots. If you do not have the time or desire to practice your short game, then you must understand that there will be instances during your round when you hit that chip less than pure. However, it is possible to bring greater consistency to your round by maintaining a few key thoughts. Keeping your head still and using a firm, crisp stroke to strike the ball will certainly help you hit the ball. In addition, reducing the amount of weight shift and using the shortest stroke possible are recommended. Each of these techniques will help any player chip the ball with greater consistency. Here are the essentials.

Difficulty: Moderate
Step 1
Place the feet close together and open your stance.
Step 2
Place the ball slightly back in your stance.
Step 3
Advance your hands in front of the ball.
Step 4
Reduce weight shift by placing your weight on your front foot.
Step 5
Eliminate soft, elongated swing tendencies. Swing firmly and crisply, do not decelerate the club.

Tips & Warnings

Keep the head down all the way through contact. Swing down and do not try to lift the ball. Make firm contact and take a divot.
