Dretzka Golf Course

Dretzka Golf Course is jewel #2 of the Milwaukee County System behind Brown Deer. This very scenic golf course and park is also home to an NCAA Cross Country running course. The rolling hills of the Kettle Morraine make this a very scenic and challenging course to play. Long fairways and small greens are Dretzka's trademark along with the fits it gives to slicers.

Compared to most of the Milw. County courses Dretzka is long. In fact it is the third longest behind Oakwood and Brown Deer. The par 4's on this course tend to be around the 400 yard range, so be prepared to use those long irons, hybrids, and fairway woods when playing here. While the fairways seem wide open, this course is designed to make your round difficult if you are prone to slicing. Deep roughs, mature trees, and not so mature trees and bushes in clumps are all waiting for you in the right rough. Add the stream that runs through all but 5 holes and a few out of bounds markers, and you have a difficult course to manuever.

One hole of note is the par 5 18th. There is water around 220 yards out at which point the hole goes vetical, up a ski hill to the small undulating green. For us normal hitters it is best to lay up off the tee and then hit a solid fairway wood as far up the ski-hill as possible. You do not want to be half way up this hills hitting your next shot.

Due to its hilly nature, I recommend that you use a cart when playing this course. I have seen healthy men in there 40's struggle to make it up the 18th fairway. This is just the biggest of quite a few hills on this course.

The clubhouse at Dretzka is very stately and houses one of the better pro-shops in the county system. It also has a restaurant serving your basic grilled fair and sitting areas that offer wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.

Dretzka also has a not exactly easy to find driving range nearby and beautiful putting greens. For a few bucks you will be given a large bag of range balls to warm up with.

I feel obligated to mention that there are some Milwaukee County Park budget issues that need to be dealt with regarding course maintenance. These problems are not limited to Dretzka, in fact they are widespread with all the parks except Brown Deer which is apparently getting a lion's share of the budget. I last played Dretzka in August of 2006 and found once pristine tee boxes now half covered in dirt and large burned out patches of grass all over the course. I am hoping this is only a temporary problem that will be solved quickly, but felt the need to alert golfers that there are some issues with this course.
