18 hole regulation length course
71 par | 6,500 yards
The 18-hole "Providence" course at the Providence Golf Course facility in Richmond, Virginia features 6,500 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. Designed by Lester George, the Providence golf course opened in 2002.
Providence has the best staff in the area. The course is challenging but fair and is well maintained. The price is a bit steep on the weekends.
Considering all of the other places to play in the Richmond area, this one is conviently located, and very fun to play. For a low handicapper like myself, i was very challenged. The pricing is very comparable for the area, and considering the condition of the other public courses in the area at this time, this one is better than all of the rest (except for maybe Independence which I have also played recently). Was very impressed with everyone in the clubhouse and grill. Considering that most golfers want everything to be perfect, and affordable, i would definately recommend this one to everyone. Considering all of the ballmarks on the greens, I think that they are getting plenty of play, so a lot of people must like the golf course, including me. I was told, new short game practice area will open late in 2007, which will also be a bonus that most placew don't have.
I would say it is one of the nicer courses to play in Richmond, nice location friendly staff but the course is over priced and they do not have a walking rate which is mostly unheard of on any golf course. I would say they probably don't have many members with the outrageous yearly membership fee. There is no dicsount unless you are retired and can play at least twice a week. I would consider joing if you could join for 1800.00 a year(cart included) I hope people will boycot the place so the rates could possibly come down to 40.00 on weekends because that is about what it is worth. I have played much nicer courses over the years for 40.00 or less
Overall, I really liked this course. The fairways were in great shape..felt like you were walking on carpet. I'm not from Richmond but visit frequently and play some. This is a course you can really score on if you hit straight and consistent. Watch out for some decieving layouts....greens look closer than expected, flags look in the front when they are really not....a good layout and design. A little pricey on the weekends ($56) but that may be the standard in the city...not sure. Woudl definitely recommend it.
Average CourseCame here at twilight. The course was challenging with lots of trees, elevation changes, uneven lies, bunkers and water - especially the back nine. The condition of the course was average. The fee was a bit high for the area but not overly so. Rental clubs, however, were expensive for a mixed set of various clubs. Riding was the same price as walking, but no GPS and yarding marking was poor. Pace of play was excellent at 4PM. Service was non-existent. Staff was not courteous and there was no beverage cart service. Only took Visa, MC. This course wants to think it is upscale, expecially with the price, but the service is definitely muni. I will not play here again.
