This facility closed nearly two years ago. Now it has become an outlet mall. What a shame.

I joined Lake Wright this past Spring and I have to say I'm surprised by some of the negative comments. There is very much a "good ol' boy" mentality around there, but the guys were very welcoming and supportive of me as a new member. The staff has always been friendly and fair, including the starters and marshalls. Remember, this is an old public course. Not a country club. These are retired guys working for their free golf. The value is decent for the course, but very good if you're an associate member. If you play more than about 20 rounds a year the associate membership is worth it. As for the course, I find it to be very underrated. I've heard the horror stories about the greens but they've been great this year. The old greenskeeper came back after a few years and tidied the place up. There are easy holes and tough ones, wide fairways on some and tight tee shots on others (1, 8, 9, 11, 14, 15 especially). The par threes are good and tough. You can score here but the course can also bite you. For those who may have written off Lake Wright in the past I recommend another try.

Today I was scheduled to play 18 holes. When I set up the tee time I was not informed that there was a 24 member tournament scheduled for 8am this morning. We started on the front 9 and to my surprise by the time we reached hole 5 there were 6 carts waiting to tee off. Not because of another player, but for the grounds crew to WATER THE GREENS! We called and was told "we will see what we can do". Really? After we finally finished the front 9 (only took 3 hours) we went to speak with Mike. When we voiced our concerns. His response was "so? What would you like me to do? We have to water the greens". I was so upset that before I said something inappropriate, I simply asked for a credit to play 9 holes at a later date. Suffice to to say I will not be playing there EVER AGAIN! It is not worth the agrivation and the clubhouse is not worth it. There is no customer service whatsoever. If you would ever like to be mistreated, then this is the place for you. They might just water the greens for you as well since we were told that thisis done all the time. I have been going here for years and never even saw them water the greens.

First off I created an account just so I could spread the word that this course is the worst! The staff is hit or miss. I only came here on a regular basis because it was close to home but ever since I had an incident there with the Pro Shop guy, I refuse to ever give them business and now I will drive 20 minutes away to go elsewhere. The man in Pro Shop insulted me in front of my son and father on Father's Day 2012. He was trying to charge me a higher price from other visits and when I questioned him, he proceeded to suggest in front of my child that I dont have the funds to play. On Father's Day in front of my son! How does a place like this stay open with employees like this? I'm sure I'm not the first person to have a bad experience here so it must be management.

The shittiest course has the most racist staff.

The price is very fair due to the look of the greens. Great course to practice on or if you want to get some quick playing in. All the staff was nice and helpful except for the older lady that works in the snack bar. By far the most rude service i have ever seen given. She was upset because I did not have enough cash to tip her and didnt mind telling me that at all. She was very loud on the phone while we tried to sit and eat. She was loudly rude to the nice young girl in there and talked badly about her when she left the room in front of everyone. I do not think my friends nor I will be going back completely due to her. I have no idea why she is even aloud to work in there.. she was unreal. Besides that.. everything was fine.

Most unfriendly staff I've ever come across at a golf course. In this economy you'd think a business would be more appreciative and welcoming to the public. Course conditions were ok, price was fair for the condition of the course.

Reviewed July 16, 2011

Good layout. A bit short, but bunkers were good and play was fast. Conditions were just so-so. It's a flat and easy to walk. Value is good, 23 bucks for twilight in the summer. One downside: next to I-64 so much traffic noise.

the course isnt in good shape but how good of course can it be if its next to an airport and a highway. the upside is the course has a great value and isnt too crowded

Reviewed May 31, 2010

Not a fan of this course. The layout of the course had too many crossing paths with other golfers. In 18 holes we had at least 3 balls land within a few feet of one of us from other golfers on other holes while we were ON THE GREEN on our hole. Normally i would chaulk this up to bad hits. But the course itself is partly to blame. Too many greens are just a few yards off from fairways of other holes with no room for mistakes. No matter where you were at on the course, "FORE" can be heard all day from all over the course. We had guys hitting from our fairway from other holes all day. One tee is so close to another green, that they actually installed a netting around the tee to protect the golfers. And driving from hole 16 to 17, has you coming back across the back of the green at 11. But the green is elevated so you can't see if anyone is playing the hole and they certainly can't see you. Coming up to the green, golfers just pop out from behind your green headed toward you, but actually going to another hole. Fairways were in good condition though. And traps were strategically placed with some high facings making it sometimes technically challenging. Always good. But it seems as though nobody repairs anything around this course either. I ended up in 2 traps and both were filled with huge divots and footprints everwhere even though every one of them had 1 to 2 rakes depending on the size of the trap. And i've never seen so many unrepaired divots on greens before. I know it's a locals favorite. But i wasn't impressed in the least. There are way too many courses around here with much, much better layouts in much better condition to consider playing here regularly. Yes it was inexpensive, and it had some exciting holes. But the bad outweigh the good on this course by a long shot.

This is the little course that could. Most reviewers seem to share a similar opinion. It's an average course but considering the price, central location and casual atmosphere, it can really be just the right course sometimes. Staff very friendly and they'll do what they can for walk-ons, but I wouldn't show up without a tee-time after 7am on a weekend. This is a locals' favorite. On a number of summer days, I've teed off at 5:55am. When I made the turn at 8am, the rest of the tee times were already stacked up. I've talked to foursomes who say they play every weekend day of the year.

Sometimes, it's a bit too casual. Jeans and t-shirts. Cigarette butts on the tee box. And, the grass needs some work. Plus, a few holes don't have much boundary between fairways. Still, if you're in a pinch to get in some golf and you don't feel like spending $70 to find out if you like a course, this is the place for you.

Played this course on Sun Morning after reading the reviews. I would like to say that I feel everyone has an opinion this is one of those. We did not have a Tee time but they had no problem getting us in. When we got to the starter he had our names and got us in place and evan asked if we minded adding a player. after completing 9 we stopped in at the snack bar and got a couple of drinks without a problem. The maintanece people on the course were very curteous to us shutting down equipment and getting out of view. The course could use a little work but we expected that going in. I did have my son with me who is learning and this course is forgiving and does challenge new golfers to several challenges. I do feel it has change from some of the reviews and I will play it again.

From what I can figure, the Lake Wright is a forty-plus year old course. Admittedly its age is showing. I grew up on this course and therefore view it with some affection; on the other hand, its condition is average and it could use a facelift. With the cost of a loop in Virginia Beach soaring, the price to play is very reasonable and the staff is always pleasant and friendly. Generally it appears to be an older crowd and there are many walkers each time I am there. The thing about LW is that it is more difficult than it would first appear. There are some very tight holes and some longer par 3s that have you making some interesting club choices. No, this is not a picture-post-card area course. Yet, even after all this time, I still enjoy the subtle challenges it provides.

I try and play a different course each week. Lake Wright isn't the worst i have played but its not the best either. Wide open fairways. Greens aren't good. Inexpensive. Laid back atmosphere around the club

This course can fool you to think it's wide open. Then you find yourself in the woods. Some holes you can bring out the bid dog but I would be careful. Greens are fast and the fairways are a little rough. Par 3s offer no little relief and cause you to reach in your bag for clubs you don't often use. Some dog legs are very difficult and require skillful shot making. The layup mentality is the best advise. Lots of water and smart course management required. Great staff and snack bar.
