Suggest Edit

The City Park course is a fun place to go and practice your golf game. It's also a perfect place for beginners and junior golfers to get a feel for the game. The course is a 9-hole track, but it plays like an executive short course with some challenges along the way, at 1,845 yards with a course rating of 30, slope of 94 and par of 30 from the longest tees. It was designed by (R) Thomas E. Clark, ASGCA/Curtis Strange and utilizes Bermuda grass. The City Park course opened in 1919, so it’s been in the Portsmouth area for generations. One of the best parts of the course is the views. You’ll find several holes that work within the terrain of the Elizabeth River, so if you play during sunrise or sunset you can snap some great pictures. Hole Nos. 3 and 4 create a fun back-to-back challenge. The third hole is 293 yards and if you’re a long hitter you can cut the treeline on the left side to put it close or possibly on the green. The fourth hole is a 328-yard dogleg left that you can cut some distance off of if you play it to the left side and long. Otherwise, a simple bailout shot to the right will set you up for a short iron into the green. The final hole is a 292 yard par-4 with water blocking the left side of the green. It can easily dampen your round, no pun intended. The course is part of City Park, which is a fun area that has a lot to do and it’s easily accessible from Clifford St., if you’re coming across the river from Westhaven.

Ive have been playing here for approx, 20 years, was a great little 9 hole mostly par 3 golf course. The wait times have gotten really bad. On Sunday August 2nd 2020 at approx 0800, the course folks allowed a 5 some walking and all employees of the course (or so they said) go in front of everyone, they had no one in front of them, and they refused to let a 2some play through. They had no golf etiquette at all. Very slow and very poor players. the course was backing up badly. with 3 groups behind us and all waiting on the 5some. The course is lacking care the greens are not cut properly and very bumpy the course lacks upkeep. Perhaps the employees should be working and not playing golf!!!!!!!

I have a good time playing here, and using the range. It is my go to course for a quick game with my son or other family members, very affordable.

Great course to work on that all important short game. Even though I havent been playing that long. I find this course as a great course to learn how to use your irons and wedges. Most people that I talk to really enjoy playing here.

What a GREAT course to start up! This is my son's introduction to the game and the first time that I've played 18 holes myself. The scenery is great, beautiful pine trees, nice water hazards that make everything blend in nicely. The only issue are the geese... Too many and they leave droppings everywhere... If you are looking to challenge your game with the irons and wedges, this should be a place to test your skills. Overall, a very nice course to practice and get things started for kids as well. Course includes a nice driving range for an affordable rate as well as a cafeteria and the Pro Shop. Which by the way, they are VERY FRIENDLY AND RESPONSIVE to you at all times! That makes this place ideal for a family golf outing! No tee time reservation needed. First come, first served. You'll love it!
