Spring 2011 Update: They really need to bite the bullet and regrade the 13th green. It is sloped too steeply and it has been a problem for many years. When you can not stop a ball on the green from above the hole or below it (a putt that misses the cup from below the hole will come all the way back to you and then some), that is a problem. It is enough to make me consider finding a new home course.

I drive about 25 miles from Maryland to play this course more than any other. As others have written, it is a course for shotmakers, heavily tree-lined with lots of dog-legs and a few blind tee-shots. The range, chipping and practice greens are all close to the clubhouse and the tee-boxes for #1 and #10.

If you like getting in a walking workout while you play, the hills on this course will put you through your paces.

Played this course yesterday. Course was in great shape. The greens were just aerated 8 days ago and were close to being fine. Fairways were nice and the ProShop is great. Staff was friendly also. The only negative in my book is no grass driving range, just mats.

When introduced to Pohick this year (09) I was satisfied and pleased overall. It presents a nice challenge with a mixture of contoured fairways and greens. Fairly expensive ($60 for w/e w/ cart)where the maintenence could be better. Basically if you run a few yards off of the fairway the first cut is not mowed low enough to get a fair shot...so basically hit your fairways. Its not like the heavily wooded surroundings is not good enough of a challenge. The rough is ROUGH. If they could maintain the first cut it would be a great course which will help to speed play tremendously especially for high handicappers.

pohick bay is sweet. it's almost as good as a classic private club (no muni's really compare to those though) challenging... design is somewhat spectacular, especially the tiered par 3's which i think there is 3 of? i was impressed and can't wait to play there again. best driving range i've come across. course layout keeps you guessing "whats next"?

Pohick is a shot makers course, not real long, but severly penal if you hot a poor shot. Some of the greens have a bit too much slope and should probably be regraded, and the rough is very sparse right now and you are liable to get a nasty lie on a bare spot surrounded by 3" high rough. Given this year's drought, I guess the sparse rough is to be expected, but they could certainly cut it down a bit to make the rough a bit more fair.

If they would slow the greens down just a notch, some of them might be a bit more fair, but if they are rolling fast as they have been, on some holes there is no way to stop your ball if you are above the hole.

Great course. Needs accurate hits of the tee in most holes to avoid the woods. Dog legs left and rights makes it challenging if you play from the blue tees. You have to ride, you cannot walk this course because of the up and down hills on a lot of holes. Needs better markings for the yargade. I will play it again and again.

Pohick Bay a place to learn

This is a great course to learn shot making. Each hole has a problem area that if you go there you will be penalized. I like the challenge and the course is in pretty good shape. The staff is terrific as well.
