Lots of blind shots and the greens were in reasonably good condition. Had a good time playing this course. This is not a very long course but is fun to play.

The course was in decent shape other than the greens (which is kind of a big deal). The clubhouse and surroundings aren't much, but that only matters if you want to have a wedding or tournament there. The real problem for me was time management. They had a league playing there, and things were so behind schedule than we had to tee off :45 minutes late. Then the pace of play was incredibly slow. In all, we basically had a 6 hour round. Not worth the drive and the price.

No question this course has the scenery, challenge and character to keep players of all levels interested. It's big question has been the tees and greens over the past few years. The new superintendent now has that under control. Course is in the best shape since it opened and getting better. Recommend to all!

I played this course in a Captains Choice Scramble for the first time yesterday. I found this course to be in excellent condition. You really have to think on several holes. Expect to get into some trouble the first time you play simply due to lack of knowledge. Fortunately, all of my team mates had played this course. I am planning on returning in the very near future to play with my friends in a non tournament format.

This is a nice public course. I understand that the conditions this year were terrible on greens and many of them were stressed because of it. However, that did not detract from the enjoyment of the round. The layout is nice and the fairways were fine. I would go back and play this one again.

Played 8/22/2010. Greens were poor. Many weeds and bare patches, and they were soaking wet to allow them to hold. Fairways were nice but shaggy, and rough was nasty tough. This is a great layout, with many blind tee shots and local knowledge required. Would only play again if greens improved.

We played here this past Friday, Sep 4th 2009. The course is in excellent shape. It still requires course management, but is a great challenge. The only hit I have, is some greens are the victim of lazy/inconsiderate/hackers, take your choice, golfers. I must have repaired at least 6-7 ball marks on numerous greens. This is no way a hit on the course, it's you 'golfers' out there and you know who you are.

Strange last review... I Play 3 time per week, course is in great shape, greens are rolling very smooth... It's not fungus, it's poanna grass mixed in with bent grass. They grow differently this time of year and creates a different color... No disease!

Course is in bad shape. Fungus on greens is bad. It looks like the greens have leprosy!!

Golfed on June 20, 2008. 18 holes, 3:30 p.m. tee time. The course was in great shape. Fairways were great, well maintained, nice and green. Rough was also in great shape and well maintained. It was high enough to effect a shot, but not so thick you couldnt get out of it. Tee boxes were in great shape. Greens are also in great shape. The greens were rather fast during our round, and they are the only greens around that you actually have to read. They had break in them and were very consistant speed and break on every hole. The thing that is wrong with most courses in this area is that the sand traps are in horrible shape, BUT NOT HERE! The crew at The Gauntlet has taken very good care of their sand traps. There were no rocks, they were nice and soft(not packed down and concrete hard), and there were also no puddles or ponds in the bottoms of the traps. The clubhouse was very nice, very well presented. The staff was great, very friendly and helpful. The course has trees and water all around it, but it is not a narrow course. It is "on par" with the level of most courses around here, Forrest Greens, Lee's Hill, Meadows Farms. It is definatly in better shape than Lee's Hill and costs less to play. I have heard that this course was just about to go under a few years back. If you went there today that wouldn't even cross your mind. The course is as green as they come, well kept and maintained to the standard it should be. This is a great value for a great round of golf!

Played the course during the Easter break and Have to say we were very pleased with the course, staff and overall experience. It was very easy to see the staff goes the extra mile to please there customers. The course is challenging and a true test of skill ( which I lack). It is nice to play at a course with some form of code unlike some other courses and there John Deere hats and camo pants(MF) and overpriced with lame ammenities (LH). Finally found a course I truely enjoyed and planning on becoming a member.

Mean and Nasty

This course has length, up hill, side hill, downhill lies, elevation changes, hazards, fast, tricky greens, mounds, trees, water. It is tough and will test any and all of a golfer's skills unless you're Dave(you will always find your ball on edge of the woods). It's relatively open from the tee box, but that is the only nice thing the designer ever did. Most will come away muttering at times, but respectful and humble. This is a good course as it is both challenging and fun. I find this course a lot more enjoyable than Meadow Farms off of Route 3. Dave don't forget you still owe me round for the job referral.

Very nice golf course. Definitely one of the best values for any course in this area. Greens were well kept and very challenging. Fairways and rough were also very well maintained. One of the top courses in the Northern Virginia area. Very scenic as well. Overall enjoyable golf experience.

Really a nice layout and interesting course. Very disappointing condition. Greens are bumpy, inconsistent and don't putt well. The condition problems have been well known in this area for some time. There's always a promise for things to improve but I haven't seen it in several years. I guess they still get enough play with the poor maintenence that it isn't a problem for them. It must be nice to be in a remote enough location that you'll get play regardless of what you invest back in the course. It's a waste of Pete Dye's talent to allow a coure with such potential to deteriorate and remain in this condition. As far as the Golf Digest award, why don't you guys invite them back and see what they have to say...
